March 2019 New Cookbook Review
March 26, 2019 by JennyMarch, how did you arrive and leave so quickly? It’s the beginning of our spring publishing rush here in North America. While not as overwhelming as September through November (Cookbooktober), the team at Eat Your Books is busy indexing, reviewing, putting up EYBDigital Previews and working on our EYBDigital Book program.
With the constant influx of cookbooks there are always a few gems that may not get the attention they deserve. Each month I will highlight three of these recent titles:
- Cocktail Codex: Origins, Fundamentals, Formulas by Alex Day, David Kaplan and Nick Fauchald, authors of the best-selling and genre-defining cocktail book Death & Co, is a comprehensive primer on the craft of mixing drinks that employs the authors’ unique “cocktail families” approach to give drink-makers of every level the tools to understand, execute, and improvise both classic and original cocktails. - Too Good to Passover: Sephardic & Judeo-Arabic Seder Menus and Memories from Africa, Asia and Europe by Jennifer Felicia Abadi is a compilation of more than 200 Passover recipes from 23 Jewish communities. Jennifer delivers a captivating read in this cookbook-memoir of over 700 pages that is well organized and thoughtful. Menus, interviews, recipes and illustrations make this a book that one will turn to time and again for inspiration, knowledge and Passover dishes. Jennifer has an active class schedule that we share on our calendar.
- 7000 Islands: Cherished Recipes and Stories from the Philippines by Yasmin Newman was recently reprinted in paperback last month and provides a beautiful look at the food of the Philippines.

- Lastly, each Sunday, I compile a listing of Kindle cookbook deals that I update throughout the week when additions are made and/or deletions.

Where Cooking Begins: Uncomplicated Recipes to Make You a Great Cook by Carla Lalli Music is simply brilliant. It is the book that new cooks, experienced cooks and cookbook lovers will love. Carla is the Food Director at Bon Appetit magazine and has a deep affection for her pressure cooker and black steel pan. Nestled in the myriad photographs and recipes are “notes” that instruct us to what we need “from the market” “spin it” (variations), “at home” (pantry ingredients) and more. Events
The New Pie: Modern Techniques for the Classic American Dessert by Chris Taylor and Paul Arguin is everything a baker could ask for: unique recipes, twists on the classics, detailed instructions and beautiful photography. Vegetables Illustrated: An Inspiring Guide with 700+ Kitchen-Tested Recipes by Cook’s Illustrated Magazine delivers over 500 pages of vegetable devotion. This impressive tome shares recipes that feature vegetables as side dishes (with meat recipes included) and main entrees.
Crumb: Show the Dough Who’s Boss by Richard Bertiner is the pastry guru’s latest book featuring his trademark detailed instructions along with photographs that take the guess work out of dough. Baguettes to exquisite loaves, such as a beautiful Leopard bread, and more are covered. This title was published in the UK last month.
Wine Country Table: Recipes Celebrating California’s Sustainable Harvest by Janet Fletcher is a guided tour of the breathtaking farms and wineries of California, complete with recipes and stunning photography. We will be bringing you a full promotion and giveaway soon. Events
Bake: Breads, Cakes, Croissants, Kouign Amanns, Macarons, Scones, Tarts by Rory Macdonald is brilliant. Exquisite photographs and painstaking instructions are featured here. I cannot wait to start creating from this title. We will have a full promotion along with a Q & A with New York’s newest pastry prince soon.
Tortellini at Midnight: and Other Heirloom Family Recipes from Taranto to Turin to Tuscany by Emiko Davies is as astounding as the author’s other books, Florentine (review) and Acquacotta (a celebration of the traditional cuisine of a lesser known part of Tuscany, the Silver Coast). New Kitchen Basics: 10 Essential Ingredients, 120 Recipes: Revolutionize the Way You Cook, Every Day by Claire Thompson follows the food writer’s successful Art of the Pantry (2017). She also has authored several other cookery titles. Claire’s goal is to make our everyday cooking easier and tastier. Her books are well thought out, approachable and would make ideal gifts for the cooks in your life (and yourself). This title is being released in the US and UK.
Bake from Scratch, Volume Three: Artisan Recipes for the Home Baker by Brian Hart Hoffman is the latest compilation of recipes from the Bake from Scratch magazines. If you know me at all, you know how much I love their superb work. This volume is as lovely as its predecessors. Hoffman’s team has turned the magazine publishing world upside down with their focus on photography, detailed unique recipes and all things for the bakers. They have set up a number of baking retreats and one day I hope to be able to attend one of these events.
Husbands That Cook: More Than 120 Irresistible Vegetarian Recipes and Tales from Our Tiny Kitchen by Ryan Alvarez and Adam Merrin is a cookbook of vegetarian recipes inspired by the husbands’ travel, relationship, and entertaining. This title is vibrantly photographed and filled with approachable, inspiring recipes. Events
Simple Cake: All You Need to Keep Your Friends and Family in Cake by Odette Williams provides recipes for 10 base cakes, 15 toppings, and endless decorating ideas to yield a treat for any occasion. I am loving this book. It’s all about the cake! Events

Andaluz: A Food Journey through Southern Spain by Fiona Dunlop offers a vivid gastronomic window on this region. Aloha
Kitchen: Recipes from Hawai’i by Alana Kysar, Maui native and
popular food blogger, brings a gorgeous cookbook of 85 fresh and
sunny recipes that reflects the major cultures that have influenced
local Hawaiʻi food. I am looking forward to receiving this title so

Perfect Meal is a stunner of a book especially for those of us
who are into presentation. Each section features inspiration from a
food writer/stylist/photographer from around the world. They share
their story, knowledge and expertise along with recipes and
gorgeous photography. This is an exceptionally special cookbook.
Asma’s
Indian Kitchen: Home-Cooked Food Brought to You by Darjeeling
Express by Asma Khan is released this month in the US having
hit the shelves in the UK in October. This book shares recipes and
stories of the Darjeeling Express which began as a dinner for 12
guests at home – Indian food, lovingly cooked from family recipes
going back generations. The recipes in this book are homage to
Asma’s royal Mughlai ancestry and the busy streets of Kolkata. The
kitchen at Darjeeling Express is run by an all-women team and
champions home-style food cooked with passion. The recipes are
split between simple mid-week meals for two, family feasts for
quick and easy cooking with less spice, feasts for friends for when
you want to show off a little and feasts to celebrate. Many of the

Founding Farmers Cookbook, Second Edition: 100 Recipes From the
Restaurant Owned by American Family Farmers by Founding
Farmers and Nevin Martell is an updated edition of the 2013 debut. This edition is updated with some
new recipes and current information on the Founding Farmers
movement and restaurant.
Buttermilk
& Bourbon: New Orleans Recipes with a Modern Flair by
Jason Santos who garnered national acclaim with his run on Fox’s TV
show Hell’s Kitchen, where he earned second place in the cut-throat
competition. His elevated Southern cuisine and bold New Orleans
flavors can be made at home with his debut cookbook. Recipes
include Buttermilk & Bourbon’s biscuits complete with dreamy

This title was previously published in the UK and AU and is now being released in the US.
The Modern Cook’s Year: Over 250 Vibrant Vegetable Recipes to See You Through the Seasons by Anna Jones was previously released in the UK last year and arrives this month courtesy of Abrams publishers in the US. This gorgeous book contains over 250 delicious vegetarian recipes interspersed with tips on everything from seasonal music playlists to flowers to look out for in each month of the year. Anna Jones is a must have author!

I’ve ordered this title as this part of the world fascinates me and I will provide more details once I receive it. Events.

There are 100 incredible recipes in the book, 33 of which are vegetarian. Each recipe has been tried and tested by twenty Pinch of Nom community members to ensure it is healthy, full of flavour and incredibly easy to make.
The Vinegar Cupboard: An Ancient Ingredient for the
Modern Cook by Angela Clutton demonstrates the many great ways
vinegars can be used to balance and enhance flavours, and enable
modern cooks to make the most of this ancient ingredient. I am a
huge fan of vinegar and have ordered this title as well.
National Trust Comfort Food by National Trust
serves up a hot soothing bowl of all your favourite comfort foods,
