This week: Irish brown bread, St. Patrick’s Day grub, cookbook giveaways and EYBD Previews

Please don’t send evil Leprechauns after me but I do not like typical Irish soda bread (online recipes) or corned beef (online recipes). I do however love brown bread (online recipes) and potatoes (especially Colcannon) – I am an Irish girl after all. I’ll give up all the other meal components for extra slices of sugary topped craggily brown bread.

My favorite recipe is one that has been passed around in the Hartin family for a while now and I’ll share it with you below (indexed). I make this loaf several times a year and every St. Patrick’s Day. This bread is not safe around me. The men folk at my table can have all the corned beef and side dishes, just leave me this bread and some orange marmalade butter and I’ll consider myself to be basking in the luck of the Irish.

Brown Bread

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

  • 1 cup of all purpose flour
  • ¼ cup of sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 cups of whole wheat flour
  • ¼ cup of vegetable shortening
  • 1 ¼ cup of buttermilk

Put the first six ingredients in a bowl and mix with a pastry fork. Cut the shortening into the dry ingredients with a pastry fork, pastry blender or large fork. Add the buttermilk and mix until it comes together – do not overmix.

Flour your bench or board – and take the mix out and knead it about ten times until it comes into a nice round 7 inch circle. Mark an X on the top with a knife. Bake for 40 minutes.

The best part: Meanwhile in a small sauce pan – mix 2 tablespoons of sugar with 1 tablespoon of water and heat until dissolved – at 40 minutes brush this mix over the top of the loaf and let bake for 5 additional minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool on a wire rack for as long as you can before you must have a piece. Serve with orange butter (1 stick of softened butter mixed with two tablespoons – or more – of orange marmalade).
