This week: Elevating black food writers, cookbook previews and giveaways
June 6, 2020 by JennyThe year 2020 has dealt us a difficult hand. We keep asking for new cards but many of us feel like folding. From the bushfires in Australia, the pandemic, to the protests across the United States after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis that are often met with hate and brutality, it seems suffering and pain grows daily. These events have hit me hard and I am taking this week to regroup and will be back next week with more food recipes.
While we all do what we can to combat the atrocities of the world, we continue to find comfort in the sharing of food. On May 31st, Beth Howard, the author of Ms. American Pie hit the streets of Minneapolis with other pie bakers to pass out pie and comfort.
Ms. Rose McGee has been comforting others since the 2014 protests in Ferguson, Missouri when she and her son loaded her trunk full of pies and headed there. She also brought pie and comfort to those suffering after the shootings in Charleston and Pittsburgh. Now is providing the same to the citizens of her hometown of Minneapolis.
The understanding of different cultures and traditions can close the wide chasm of acceptance. The sharing of food can be the first step toward healing. Anthony Bourdain said, “You learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together.” Right now, more than ever, we need more Anthony Bourdains – people who are respectful and listen to others and are willing to build bridges to solutions instead of walls that separate us and pour fuel on smoldering tensions.
In 140 US cities around the United States, restaurants have been vandalized, looted, and sometimes set afire. These acts after many have been shuttered due to COVID-19. Owners are scared and frustrated, but many play a supporting role by providing protesters with food, supplies, and donations. Food people are the best people, we must remember to support our restaurants and chefs when we are able.
Eat Your Books has always featured cookbooks and authors from all cultures and ethnicities. This week we highlighted black cookbook authors, food writers, and black-owned bookshops.
