This week: Elevating black food writers, cookbook previews and giveaways

The year 2020 has dealt us a difficult hand. We keep asking for new cards but many of us feel like folding. From the bushfires in Australia, the pandemic, to the protests across the United States after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis that are often met with hate and brutality, it seems suffering and pain grows daily. These events have hit me hard and I am taking this week to regroup and will be back next week with more food recipes.

While we all do what we can to combat the atrocities of the world, we continue to find comfort in the sharing of food. On May 31st, Beth Howard, the author of Ms. American Pie hit the streets of Minneapolis with other pie bakers to pass out pie and comfort.

Ms. Rose McGee has been comforting others since the 2014 protests in Ferguson, Missouri when she and her son loaded her trunk full of pies and headed there. She also brought pie and comfort to those suffering after the shootings in Charleston and Pittsburgh. Now is providing the same to the citizens of her hometown of Minneapolis.

The understanding of different cultures and traditions can close the wide chasm of acceptance. The sharing of food can be the first step toward healing. Anthony Bourdain said, “You learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together.” Right now, more than ever, we need more Anthony Bourdains – people who are respectful and listen to others and are willing to build bridges to solutions instead of walls that separate us and pour fuel on smoldering tensions.

In 140 US cities around the United States, restaurants have been vandalized, looted, and sometimes set afire. These acts after many have been shuttered due to COVID-19. Owners are scared and frustrated, but many play a supporting role by providing protesters with food, supplies, and donations. Food people are the best people, we must remember to support our restaurants and chefs when we are able.

Eat Your Books has always featured cookbooks and authors from all cultures and ethnicities. This week we highlighted black cookbook authors, food writers, and black-owned bookshops. Today, I’ll share a sampling of food blogs that we can visit and support and if you have any favorites, please let us know in the comments.

    Excellent!

I received your email earlier this morning and it was inadequate “The year 2020 has dealt us a difficult hand. We keep asking for new cards but many of us feel like folding. From the bushfires in Australia, the pandemic, to the destruction and rioting across the United States after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, it seems suffering and pain grows daily.” First of all, you prioritize the rioting above George Floyd and second, you don’t mention police brutality. You make it seem like one random individual died. I love your website but I ask you to reconsider your words and your phrasing. Systematic racism, white supremacy- we need to say it and acknowledge it and work against it.

Jennycooks1971 – You read it the way you wanted to read it. Racism and police brutality is a major concern for me personally. I felt I needed to list how difficult 2020 and take a gentler approach to the subject. Everyone will have their thoughts on this and they don’t all feel like I (we) do. If you follow me personally on social media you know where my heart is. Just writing this small piece and weighing every word took everything out of me. I was hesitant about even writing about it at all and had several people read it and they read it how I meant it as they know me – I reworded a bit because not everyone knows how disgusted and hurt I am about our treatment of black lives in this country.

I have to agree with the previous commenter about today’s email. It’s great to hear that you care deeply about racial injustice and police brutality – then why not use your platform to directly acknowledge it? I appreciate that you are elevating black cookbook authors and food writers but that is not enough without recognizing the real pain and anger felt by black communities right now following George Floyd’s murder and countless loss of black lives at the hands of police (not exclusively in 2020). This cannot be equated with a natural disaster or even the pandemic.

Thank you for putting the outrage in the context of EYB. You’ve given everyone another great avenue to show support. I appreciate seeing all the different ideas of ways we can help. We aren’t all cut out for the same action. The more actions people are aware of, the more people there will be who will participate in our efforts to heal, grow, and learn. Thank you!!
