Recipes to celebrate Diwali

Diwali, a five-day festival of lights celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains across the world, celebrates new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, is worshipped on this holiday, which this year falls on November 12. Diwali celebrations frequently include fireworks, candles, and other forms of light displays. As with many holidays around the world, food plays an important role in the festivities, with sweets taking on special significance.

Food and Wine have put together a list of Diwali recipes to help you honor the holiday. The recipes come from a variety of sources including Padma Lakshmi, Hetal Vasavada, and Maneet Chauhan, and include savory items like pani puri and sweets such as pista burfi bark.

If the Food and Wine list leaves you wanting, head over to Delish, where they have assembled 27 additional Diwali recipes. The options there range from peda, a fudge-like confection that is usually dairy-based, to khichdi (aka kitchari), an endlessly adaptable side dish which at its most basic made from rice, legumes, turmeric, and salt.

The EYB Library contains multiple options for many of the dishes described at Delish and Food and Wine:
