This week: Recipes Lost and Found; EYBD Previews and more

Recently, I came across a new-to-me show on Magnolia Network (Discovery Plus*), called Recipes Lost and Found. Classically trained chef and food anthropologist Casey Corn helps people to rediscover their lost family recipes, diving into each family’s history and culture to reveal the magic/secrets behind the dish and bring their memories back to the table.

The first episode I watched was Great-Grandma’s Lasagna which was from Season 2. I am on a quest to catch up on episodes I have missed. Luckily, there are only four episodes per season. How Casey picks apart each family member’s memories to carefully craft and recreate a lost recipe is incredibly interesting. I now have that lasagna with the paper-thin noodles and “sneaky white sauce” on my list to make.

I reached out to Casey on social media who indicated that they would soon be adding the recipes to her website (or perhaps this one). I also asked her if a cookbook was in the works. She responded that there would have to be many more episodes for that to happen. Let’s hope for that to come to fruition.

How many of our Members have food memories that they have tried to recreate? Did you have success? I was with a friend on Saturday night and she was talking about her family’s heritage and how she has been trying to make her mother’s chicken and dumplings for years and could never get it just right – especially the gravy. I mentioned that maybe her mother browned the chicken pieces first and then created the gravy using the bits from the bottom of the pan – the fond. We then talked about the show above and she texted me Sunday to tell me she had watched several episodes and loved it.

I always tell friends and family to write down their recipes to keep them for future generations. One day you don’t want to be banging your head against the kitchen counter trying to recreate mom’s gravy.

I think a fun idea would be to start a forum post on recreating lost recipes where our Members join in and try to help other Members perfect their family recipes. I started a topic and if anyone wishes to join in either looking for help or offering help and suggestions, please do.
