The last two weeks: Open call for James Beard entries, who is Linda Skeens, cookbook news, recipes and more
October 7, 2022 by JennyThe entry period has begun for James Beard submissions. Please see this post for more detailed information. If you are an author or publisher and have any questions about this process, please email me at jenny@eatyourbooks.com.
Who is Linda Skeens? In June the memes were flying all over social media regarding the prize winning champion of the Virginia State Fair. She won first, second and third place for best cookies. She also swept all three awards for candy and for savory bread. In fact, she won the blue ribbon for cake, pie, brownie, sweet bread and best overall baked good (that was strawberry fudge.) And there is more. She also won for canned tomatoes, canned corn, pickled peppers, sauerkraut, relish, spaghetti sauce and both jelly and jam. Then she took top honors in quilt embroidery. And after the Virginia Kentucky District Fair posted the dominating results to Facebook in June, she went viral. If she entered a contest, she won.
In 2023, we will find out what all the hullabaloo is about. Her book Linda Skeens Blue Ribbon Kitchen Cookbook will be available one year from the time that she went viral. You can pre-order the title on Linda’s website.
About a year ago, we shared the news about Sharon Wee’s Growing Up in a Nonya Kitchen: Singapore Recipes from My Mother 2012 cookbook being plaguerized. The good news is that Wee’s book is now back in print and can be ordered. Click our BUY BOOK button or call your local bookstore to have them order you a copy. I just received it today and it is lovely.
For the first time in nearly three years, Bonnie Slotnick Cookbooks is hosting an event at her iconic New York City store. On October 15th from 1:30 to 3:30 pm EST, Yvette Zuniga Jemison will be signing copies of her new book My South Texas Kitchen: Traditional Recipes and Modern Tips. Yvette has additional events planned. You may click on the Book Record for more information.
Lastly, coming October 12th Antoni Porowski, cookbook author and star of “Queer Eye”, will host a food contest on Netflix for adult amateurs inspired by an iconic children’s toy: Easy-Bake Battle: The Home Cooking Competition. Our friend Kat Kinsman will be co-hosting an episode in December! Check out the trailer here. My only thought is how long will these episodes be if everything is baked with a light-bulb powered oven?
