This week: BUDMO! preorder for Ukraine relief; James Beard Awards weekend; recipes; cookbook previews and giveaways

Rizzoli New York (publisher) and the Rizzoli Bookstore (separate companies, but under the same family umbrella) rolled out this week an effort to help with the refugee situation in Ukraine. They are offering an exclusive pre-sale of BUDMO!: Recipes from a Ukrainian Kitchen by Anna Voloshyna, a Ukrainian-born, California-based chef, blogger, and culinary instructor. (Pub date Sep 6th, 2022).

For every cookbook purchased between now and June 1st via the Rizzoli Bookstore, they will donate 10% of all proceeds to Anna’s charity of choice, World Central Kitchen, who is leading the efforts at eight separate locations in the region to feed millions of refugees. A little about the book: Budmo is Ukrainian for cheers and the vibrant cover reflects the beautiful dishes that are shared within its pages. I was able to view a small sampling and to say the book is stunning is an understatement. The publisher says it best: “A gorgeous magenta pkhali comes alive with roasted beets and a tangy pomegranate molasses. Borscht is reinvented with green sorrels and semi-soft eggs. And Voloshyna even shares a personal recipe for her Ukrainian grandmother’s duck – roasted to a delicious crispy-brown perfection.”


Earlier this month, the James Beard Foundation® announced the full ceremony schedule for the 2022 James Beard Awards® to be held in Chicago. The theme of this year’s awards is “Gather for Good,” building on the Foundation’s mantra of Good Food for Good. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 11th at Columbia College. The host for the 2022 Media Awards ceremony is Lisa Ling, journalist, author, and host and Executive Producer of the new series Take Out on HBO Max.

The James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony will be held on Monday, June 13, 2022, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The host of the 2022 Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony is actor, chef, author, and executive producer at Food & Wine Magazine, Kwame Onwuachi. Kwame’s latest book My America: Recipes from a Young Black Chef will be released on May 3rd, 2022.
