The last two weeks: Baking news, GBBO and other baking shows to begin soon, a look inside a few autumn baking titles, cookbook giveaways, EYBD Previews and more
August 6, 2021 by JennyThis week Brian Hart Hoffman of Bake from Scratch announced a new series of Williams-Sonoma virtual baking classes. The first class is set for August 9th and features croissants. Additional classes are lined up throughout August and Edd Kimber and Amanda Frederickson will be joining Brian as set out in our calendar.
Speaking of croissants, Brian is the latest culinary star to design his own “No Kid Hungry” merchandise for Williams-Sonoma. The spatula, towels and soap sets are adorable and 30% of all proceeds goes to No Kid Hungry a campaign by Share Our Strength, an organization working to end hunger and poverty.
Brian’s next book will be released in September: The Pie & Tart Collection: 170 Recipes for the Pie & Tart Enthusiast. My copy arrived this week and I have been drooling over it ever since. Eggnog custard tart, Sparkling wine chocolate ganache tart and Butterscotch pie with coconut curry crust are a few examples of the recipes. I particularly love the Around the World in Pies chapter with fifty pages of global temptation. Also note that Bake from Scratch: Volume Six: Artisan Recipes for the Home Baker is available for preorder (March 2022).
There are loads of great baking titles this year and I covered a great many in my Cookbook Preview for Fall/Autumn 2021. The Nordic Baker: Plant-Based Bakes and Seasonal Stories from a Kitchen in the Heart of Sweden by Sofia Nordgren was a pdf that came in after I published the aforementioned preview. It is a stunner of a book filled with beautiful imagery along with amazing sounding recipes. Raspberry pancake cake, Swedish butterkaka, and loaves of rustic bread are a few things that caught my eye.
Recently, I came across an article about 17 year old Nysa Adurkar who loves to bake and has written a cookbook with 65 recipes entitled Whip & Whisk. I have written to the bookstore in India to order a copy or six for myself and gifts. Bonus is that all proceeds from the sale of her book goes toward Nysa’s “Joys of Baking” project where she provides customized cakes for underprivileged children. I will update with additional details when I have them. Nysa sells cakes in India on her website.
In other baking news: Netflix announced it will stream The Great British Baking Show this fall/autumn as they have for the last few series. We will keep you posted on a premiere date for the debut in the UK and then on Netflix. If you are craving more baking television, Netflix has the following to offer: “Bake Squad” hosted by Christina Tosi will debut on August 11th; “Nailed It” will premiere on September 15th; “Baking Impossible” will debut on October 6th; and “School of Chocolate” hosted by Amaury Guichon will hit the streaming service sometime later this year as well. Update: Disney’s Magic Bake-Off begins August 13th.
Updated: News that a new baking show entitled “Baking It” will be aired later this year. “Per the official description, the bakers will join Andy and Maya at their “winter cabin for a celebration of culinary holiday traditions”, suggesting a December release. Contestant duos will include spouses, siblings, best friends and more, who will work together to create outstanding savory and sweet creations for themed challenges with the hopes of winning a cash prize.”
