The last two weeks: The dangers or benefits of working on the Library, cookbook giveaways and EYBD Previews, recipes and more!

Some of you may recall My Big Fat Cookbook Purge of 2021 initiative that I began when I was younger and full of hope (in March). Some recent issues have hindered my ability to lift or do manual labor which has slowed down the progress of my efforts. My goal is to still knock down some of the mountains of madness here but it will have to wait.

I have taken on some of the index manager responsibilities and am enjoying it immensely. The only issue is that while organizing the EYB Library and learning about books that were not on my radar – I am developing a case of the “must haves”. For instance, this week Sweet by James Martin caught my eye (along with a few others) and I had to order it.

Let me tell you about one of the books that I have purchased during the last few months which has really become a favorite of mine. In Praise of Veg: A Modern Kitchen Companion by Alice Zaslavsky is a relatively newer release. I hemmed and hawed on ordering this one as it is somewhat expensive. But everytime I came across the book in the Library, I found my resolve weakening. Coming to the conclusion that resistance is futile, I hit the buy book button.

This book is an absolute work of brilliance and beauty. There are 188 recipes as well as a wealth of information shared: from buying and storing, how to cook the veg, which foods are complementary to the particular veg and more. For example with regard to wombak (Chinese cabbage or wong bok), Alice guides us on how to wash and store the wombak (including freezing) and which parts can be used (everything but the very base). We learn that carrot (and other foods) work well with the veg and how to use what might be called scraps – the outer leaves – this eliminating waste by providing recipes utilizing those leaves. This colorful volume is nearly 500 pages and filled with illustrations and lovely imagery.

I am trying to ignore the enticing books I come across daily while cleaning up certain book records. It is bad enough that the books coming out later this year are tempting me; I’m already excited for these 2022 releases: The Wok: Recipes and Techniques by J. Kenji López-Alt; Korean American: A Cookbook by Eric Kim; and The Pain D’Avignon Baking Book by Uliks Fehmiu which were just added to our Library this week. It won’t be long until there is a 2022 cookbook preview post. Time in the cookbook world flies by rapidly.

LOL about “when I was younger and full of hope”. Did you read my mind? It has been that kind of week!I hope whatever is hindering progress is just a temporary setback.
