This week: Apple cider doughnuts and apple recipes, best cookbooks 2020, giveaways, EYBD previews and more

We talked about pumpkin last week. If there is another food synonymous with fall/autumn it is the apple and apple cider. One of our favorite things to do back in New York was to go apple picking. Heading out on a day when there is a slight chill in the air and picking our own fruit was always met with a reward of hot apple cider doughnuts. We would buy an extra sack to enjoy back home but they never made it all the way back on the drive.

There are a plethora of recipes (online recipes) that contain apples, apple cider, or apple cider vinegar in our EYB Library. Apple cider packs a punch in all types of recipes both sweet and savory. If you are looking for apple pie recipes (online recipes) we have nearly 6,000 indexed here. While the pie is great, I prefer the apple dumpling. There is something special about that individual little bundle of joy especially with cider sauce as shown in our photo and recipe below.

For cookbooks devoted to apples, here are a few of our members’ favorites: The Apple Lover’s Cookbook by Amy Traverso (a new updated edition of this book has just been published), Apple Pie Perfect: 100 Delicious and Decidedly Different Recipes for America’s Favorite Pie by Ken Haedrich, Short Stack Vol 11: Apples by Andrea Albin and Apple: Recipes from the Orchard by James Rich .

What are your apple picking memories and your favorite recipes to enjoy during this season? Leave us a comment.

I recently tried and fell in love with the Apple Cider Doughnut Loaf Cake from the September 2020 issue of Bon Appétit magazine. I have made several and shared them with friends and neighbors who all gave this cake their hearty approval. If you want the flavor of apple cider doughnuts without the mess of frying them in hot oil this little loaf cake is for you.
