This week: Recipes for one bowl baking, a preview of 2020 baking cookbooks, EYBD previews, and cookbook giveaways.

This week, my cousin posted on social media that she had a cake mix fail. It appears that the cake mix she used expired in 2015. I came to the rescue too late with some links sharing one-bowl cake recipes and thought our members would like to add a few quick recipes to their arsenal.

We have over 133 recipes (online recipes) in our library for one-bowl cakes. My favorite of these recipes is Alice Medrich’s One-bowl vanilla cake pictured above from her book Sinfully Easy Delicious Desserts: Quicker Smarter Recipes. Even though I love to bake, there are times when I want something quick and easy with little clean-up. I preface the following statement with “I am not a food snob” but cake mix cakes taste off to me. For a chocolate cake, I turn to Jessie Sheehan’s One-bowl chocolate snack cake with cream cheese frosting pictured below.

If you are looking for one-bowl brownie recipes (online recipes), we have you covered. Every time you bake you don’t have to dirty each vessel in your kitchen or cover yourself with flour. You aren’t in the Great British Bake Off after all. It’s okay to whip up something homemade that takes little effort. Some of my favorite quick and easy resources are the following special issue magazines and cookbooks:

This Week on our Blog

Since our last roundup, Darcie has written articles entitled: Caring for your cookbook collection, Jay Rayner’s favorite restaurant meals, 2020 James Beard Cookbook Award Nominees announced, Celebrating Cinco de Mayo, When chefs become home cooks and When inspiration eludes, turn to comfort. Darcie’s weekly food news antipasto is shared every Sunday #foodnews brings up these information-packed posts).

There is a wealth of baking cookbooks being published this year! My Let Them Eat Cake shares a look at these books (linked within this post is my preview on all things pie). I want them all! I tackled another “secret” recipe that was released last week, the Hershey Lodge chocolate chip cookie which was a good cookie but hasn’t topped the Levain or Doubletree version yet. I also tried a chewy cookie recipe that has been named The worst chocolate chip cookies. This was definitely a chewy cookie but very sweet. The brown sugar is necessary for the chewy factor and the addition of maple syrup, while providing a caramel note, adds to that sweetness. I have a bowl of dough in the fridge and I will sprinkle fleur de sel on the next batch to see if the sweetness factor can be dialed down.

I also shared that Ina Garten has new shows coming soon along with an earlier date for her new cookbook. My latest Quick Bites featured Cathy Barrow and news on her latest project. Remember to keep checking our online events post for updates including the Lucky Rice cook-along.

Today’s blog entry added more recipes to my must-try pile, including 3 chocolate chip cookie ones. (I must be the only person left who has yet to try the Levain cookie.)

Excited for comfort food cooking with Ina. If only the book release could be bumped up by a few months instead of weeks!

I tried the Levain version on Parsley Sage Sweet. Very good. In a matter of minutes, my people made a dozen disappear (I made 4 dozen instead of one).
