This week: Favorite pie cookbooks, best apple pie recipes, cookbook giveaways, and previews
February 29, 2020 by JennyLast month, we featured the best recipes for pie crust. As I was updating our EYB cookbook library with new 2020 titles, the myriad baking books (which made me giddy with anticipation) and ten specific books devoted to pie being published this year caught my attention. Pie baking has suddenly become baking’s It Girl.
I thought it was time to prepare a roundup of past, present, and future pie cookbooks. Accordingly, were you a pie baker, when pie baking wasn’t cool? shares EYB members’ favorite pie books, a look at past, current and future titles, and as many pies as you can shake a stick at. And, yes, we have many pie on a stick recipes in our library.
In the USA, apple pie reigns supreme. There are nearly 4,500 apple pie recipes indexed here at EYB and 1,500 online recipes. Pie baker, Ken Haedrich wrote a cookbook devoted to apple pie: Apple Pie Perfect: 100 Delicious and Decidedly Different Recipes for America’s Favorite Pie.
Bakers differ on which apples are best for baking, which thickening agents work best and other points of contention. Grace Elkus at the kitchn tested four well-loved recipes. After some research, the four pies that made the cut came from Gordon Ramsay caramelized apple pie, Grandma Ople’s 5-star apple pie, King Arthur’s Apple pie, and Smitten Kitchen’s Even more perfect apple pie (pictured above). For the testing particulars, see Elkus’ post where you will learn that Smitten Kitchen’s pie made the highest marks.
What is your favorite apple pie recipe?
Since our last roundup, Darcie has written articles that include a piece on the long history that politics and cooking have shared, the announcement of the prize-winning cookbook from the Art of Eating, the behaviors that drive chefs batty, a new show called ‘Dishing with Julia Child’ coming to PBS and the André Simon Food and Drink book award winners for 2019. Darcie’s weekly food news antipasto is shared every Sunday (#foodnews brings up these information-packed posts).
Our monthly newsletter was sent out on Wednesday – check your email inboxes. Remember you can always access current and past issues in our archive. The newsletter highlighted the February New Cookbook Review and a summary of February’s cooking options in our EYB Cookbook Clubs. Our featured author is Aran Goyoaga and Sweet Paul Magazine is the highlighted magazine this month.
