Best selling cookbooks of 2015

Last month our friends at cookbook stores around the world gave us their picks for their favorite books of 2015.  Now we asked them for their top sellers.  We thought it would be interesting to compare the lists from specialist stores in the USA to that for all US sales from the publishing industry data company, Nielsen.  They are very different lists (with only 2 books –The Food Lab and Thug Kitchen – appearing on both). Five of the 2015 bestsellers were also Top 10 books in 2014.

PW certainly has struck a vein; rich get richer. I'm happy to see that the Food Lab is selling briskly (just please don't let it inspire another round of equally oversized, overweight tomes). Speaking of which, does the Neilsen list include ebooks (Kindle et al.), or just physical ones? Unsurprisingly given the Serious Eats audience and the mammoth 7-lb nature of the actual book, the e-versions of Food Lab are a bigger percentage of sales than for most other major releases.

Thanks so much for this roundup; it's fascinating and funny to see the differences between cities — and even between stores in the same city.

The Nielsen sales figures do include eBooks. For small specialist stores, a lot of sales can depend on whether an author does an appearance there. For example I know that Ruth Reichl is a big draw – I went to a sold-out talk at the Brattle Theater (capacity 225) in Cambridge MA and the price included a copy of the book. 225 sales is a lot for one cookbook from one store (not on our list as it was a general bookstore). So it will often be that the book does well in one store but not another because the author went there.
