The last two weeks: Cookbook libraries, new print feature at EYB, cookbook giveaways, EYBD previews and more!
April 2, 2021 by JennySince my last roundup, we’ve been busy! There have been many cookbooks indexed and a new member added to our team. But before we cover those things, I thought it would be nice to talk a bit about cookbook libraries or libraries with a heavy cookbook collection for today’s topic. April 4th begins National Library Week so this is a great time to cover what our library systems can do for us.
When researching cookbook libraries, I came across this recent article in the Washington Post that reminds us that our local library can be a jumping off point to becoming more adventurous in our cooking. As the writer points out, the library can also save you money by experiencing a cookbook before you hit the buy button.
“There’s a lot of interest and use by home cooks in public libraries,” says Michelle Jeske, president of the Public Library Association. In the Denver Public Library, where she’s the city librarian, cookbooks are the top circulating section in nonfiction, making up about 11 percent of nonfiction checkouts in 2020.
If there’s a cookbook or subject you want to explore that isn’t in your local library system, ask for it. There is also the possibility of borrowing or buying (while on sale) an e-book version of a title. Just like most of our members, I love holding a book in my hands but sometimes I am disappointed in the contents of a title and wish I could have taken a look at the book before purchasing.
If a title isn’t on our Kindle deals post and you would like to try before you buy, OverDrive may be the answer. Libraries use this platform to offer their digital collections including magazines! Head to OverDrive and meet Libby (cute right?) your computerized librarian. Libby will be your guide to this service. Be sure to check out the WaPo article for the other library services available including many online resources/classes during COVID.
A member of The Cookbook Junkies recently asked if there were “cookbook libraries” which was the seed that began this post. I found a number of great resources including this piece on culinary collections, by host institutions. The links below highlight various collections around the world and other related topics.
