Fruitful Cookbook Giveaway

Sarah Johnson is a pastry chef who trained under Alice Waters at Chez Panisse in San Francisco and currently splits her time between Spring Restaurant, London, and the much-feted Heckfield Place in Hampshire as Head of Pastry Development. Fruit and farms are central to Sarah’s food philosophy and she meets regularly with growers to source the finest fruit for delicious, accessible recipes.
Her debut cookbook Fruitful: Sweet and Savoury Fruit Recipes Inspired by Farms, Orchards and Gardens is a celebration of fruit, and all the glorious variety it can bring to our plates. It is a gorgeous book with stunning photography. The title is organized as follows: Citrus, Stalks & Shrubs, Berries, Stone Fruit, Other Orchard & Vine Fruit, Pome Fruit and ends with Dried Fruit. Sarah offers techniques for cooking with fruit as well as pairings that work well together. Included are plenty of jams, sorbets and ice creams! This is such a well-done book with a little something for everyone along with a wealth of information on fruitful cooking and baking.
Recipes include Lemon curd tart, Lemony chicken piccata, Pan-fried duck breast with blackcurrants and black pepper, Apricot and muscat tart, Braised pork shoulder with cider and caramelized apples, Cold cherries and soft almond cookies, and Hazelnut and pear cake with espresso. Two recipes are available online – Almond marmalade cake and Ginger cake with gooseberries and lemon cream. There are three fruit puddings available at The Times (UK) if you have a subscription.
Events: The author has events planned at:
- Chez Panisse on June 6th where she will be serving dishes from the book
- Gourmandise School Santa Monica on June 12th at 12pm there will be a farmer’s market tour, demo and signing
- Omnivore Books on June 19th – an author talk
- Ballymaloe on July 3rd – Sarah will be the guest chef and will be cooking these recipes from the book:
- Honey yoghurt parfait with roasted blueberries and macerated strawberries
- Almond cake with roasted apricots and candied rose
- Blackcurrant jelly with crackers and St. Tola cheese
- Savoury lemon chicken piccata
