The top 100 most popular cookbooks owned by EYB Members

In Darcie’s Food News Antipasto yesterday, she mentioned The Zuni Cafe Cookbook as being one of the top books on Members’ bookshelves. A Member thought it would be interesting to learn which books are “tops” in our Library. This information is easy enough to find: Go to Books, Filter by Popularity and there you have it.

But I thought it might be nice to see the information in outline form so I have set out below the top 100 books owned by EYB Members as of today:

Please remember: this is the data from Members’ Bookshelves – not the top 100 books as viewed by EYB but the top number of books on Members’ Bookshelves – thus you may not see your favorites on this list! (See the bottom of this post for the top 100 sorted by “Buzz”).

What a great list to look at. I think I may have half, but over the years I’ve had many more and given them away (space constraints – before Kindle!)

  • KatieK1  on  January 22, 2024

    44 or so.

Gee, some people really have a corner on the market. Jamie Oliver has 10 books on the list. I, for one, have nearly every Ottolenghi cookbook and I see I’m not alone. Trusting particular authors to deliver recipes that work is undoubtedly behind this.

Another revealing list is to sort the canon of indexed books by “Buzz” – it’s interesting to see which books are the most used and reviewed. It’s like the list above is the aspirational, and the buzziest books are the ones we most use and cherish everyday.

      Updated.

  • SusaMS  on  January 23, 2024

Great list but missing the fantastic series of the Roasting Tin cookbooks by Rukmini Iyer. Green Roasting Tin is one of my favourites of all my cookbooks and I’m not even a vegetarian!

  • MonikaM  on  January 23, 2024

Where is Donna Hay on this? I own every Ottolenghi cookbook, but also most by Donna Hay and surprised not to see her on the list. Agree with others that Rukmini Iyer’s series is missing (including India Express!), as is Tenderheart, probably the best vegetarian cookbook out there. Also very little by Sabrina Ghayour … she is fab!

  • Anea25  on  January 23, 2024

13 for the 1st 16 for the second – missing a lot of regional cookbooks in these lists (well they are my favorites)

  • Jane  on  January 23, 2024

For those mentioning the missing authors, this list isn’t our view of the top 100 cookbooks but a pure reflection of the data on how many members own the books. Because EYB is an international site with half our membership in the USA, the books that appear will be those best known internationally. So Rukmini Iyer is very popular in the UK (I’m also a fan and own all her books) but not so well known elsewhere. Donna Hay likewise is huge in Australia but has not crossed over into superstar status elsewhere. Persiana by Sabrina Ghayour is on the list at #75.

And finally, I’m sure Tenderheart will be in the top 100 within a couple of years. It’s only been out a year and it can take a while for the Bookshelf numbers to increase. When members see frequent positive notes on recipes from a book, it creates interest in owning the book. So if you love a book and want others to love it too, don’t forget to add notes (and photos/ratings) when you cook from it.

Heh. I have Mastering the Art of French Cooking and that is it… I never have been trendy.

  • breakthroughc  on  January 23, 2024

Very interesting. I don’t own any Jamie Oliver cookbooks. When you sort by buzz very few of his come up in the top 100, but most of Ina Garten’s do.

  • Thrasymachus  on  January 24, 2024

I own 38 in the first list and 35 in the second list. Seems like I need to add a few more to my collection

  • Pamsy  on  January 24, 2024

20 in the first list and 12 in the second. However, I don’t own anything by Ottolenghi.

  • averythingcooks  on  January 25, 2024

I have 35 titles from list 1 and 46 titles from list 2. I also have several well used, beloved Canadian books but I can understand why they didn’t make these lists 🙂

  • fultre  on  January 29, 2024

I have 23 titles from the first and 32 titles from the second. Interestingly, some of my favorite and most used cookbooks are not on either list—Everyday Baker by Abigail Johnson Dodge, Zoe Bakes Cakes, Dolce Italiano by Gina DePalma, any of Hank Shaw’s cookbooks, Molly Stevens’ All About Roasting & All About Braising.

  • TrishaCP  on  February 9, 2024

I was surprised by the lack of Diana Henry books in the first list…and not at all surprised she was featured much more frequently in buzzed about books. She is fab and I hope she is feeling better soon.

  • ellabee  on  February 10, 2024

It’s always exciting to see books rocket into the top 50 or 100 based on word of mouth & cooking from them; Six Seasons is a good recent example. Salt Fat Acid Heat is another (aided in that case by a winning social media presence).
