IACP 2023 Award Finalists
August 9, 2023 by DarcieThe nominees for the 2023 IACP Cookbook and Media Awards prove that there remain deep reservoirs of culinary knowledge, cultural heritage, and cooking, baking, and drinks techniques to explore. The books cover wide-ranging subject matter and cultures and the nominees in the American category showcase the diversity of flavors found in this country: Korean American: Food that Tastes Like Home by Eric Kim (also nominated for First Book: Julia Child Award), Six California Kitchens by the late Sally Schmitt, and The Woks of Life: Recipes to Know and Love from a Chinese American Family by Bill, Kaitlin, Judy and Sarah Leung.
The General cookbook category features three heavy hitters, and it will be interesting to see which powerhouse comes out on top. This matchup features Food52 Simply Genius: Recipes for Beginners, Busy Cooks, and Curious People by Kristen Miglore versus Milk Street: Cook What You Have: Make a Meal Out of Almost Anything by Christopher Kimball and Ottolenghi Test Kitchen: Extra Good Things by Noor Murad and Yotam Ottolenghi.
In the Health and Nutrition category we find three plant-centric books including Evergreen Kitchen by Bri Beaudoin, Vegan Cooking for Two by America’s Test Kitchen, and Good for Your Gut: A Plant-Based Digestive Health Guide and Nourishing Recipes for Living Well by Desiree Nielsen.
Cocktails and drink titles include: Caesar Country: Cocktails, Clams & Canada by Aaron Harowitz and Zack Silverman, Cure: New Orleans Drinks and How to Mix ’Em from the Award-Winning Bar by Neal Bodenheimer, and Emily Timberlake and Bourbon: The Story of Kentucky Whiskey by Clay Risen.
Other books of note include On the Himalayan Trail: Recipes and Stories from Kashmir to Ladakh by Romy Gill and West Winds: Recipes, History and Tales from Jamaica by Riaz Phillips (Culinary Travel) and The Vegan Chinese Kitchen: Recipes and Modern Stories from a Thousand-Year-Old Tradition (First Book: Julia Child Award) by Hannah Che.
We would be remiss to neglect the Baking category, especially when the competition features knockout titles like The King Arthur Baking School: Lessons and Techniques from the Baker’s Classroom by King Arthur Baking Company; The Perfect Loaf: The Craft and Science of Sourdough Breads, Sweets, and More by Maurizio Leo; and Flour Power: The Practice and Pursuit of Baking Sourdough Bread by Tara Jensen.
