Increase your cooking intelligence with RecipeIQ

One of the things I miss about the recipe app that I once used (now defunct) is that it quickly calculated nutritional information based on the ingredient list. While there are a handful of websites that offer such calculations, they are tedious to use and have all manner of annoying pop-up advertisements. However, I’ve recently learned about a new app that will take any recipe I have – online or in print – and quickly let me know the nutritional information. It’s called RecipeIQ and is available for iPhone and Android.

There are two plans for the app, a free version with ads and a premium option without ads and with bonus features. Both versions let you download recipes from the web or take a screenshot of a recipe and upload it to the app, which calculates nutritional values including micronutrients. You can also add or delete ingredients to match your dietary needs and restrictions, and easily convert between metric and imperial measurements. Additionally, both the free and premium versions allow you to create a personalized cookbook with saved recipes and images.

The premium version of the app adds features including the ability to calculate the total nutritional value of an entire meal or a group of meals, a feature dubbed “Reverse Nutrition” where you can see which nutrients come from which recipe components, the ability to add sub-recipes like sauces, and it’s ad-free for a seamless user experience. I’m starting with the free version but expect I will pony up for the one-time option if it continues to perform well. You can try the premium option free for 30 days.
