This week: EYB links up with ckbk; recipes; EYBD Previews and more

It’s been a busy and exciting week at Eat Your Books. This week we announced that we have connected the EYB database to ckbk’s library of digital cookbooks. ckbk is a cookbook subscription site where you can access the full content of more than 700 great cookbooks, the majority of which are indexed here on EYB (and more will be indexed every week). For all the details, please see Jane’s post.

As a reminder, our Ideas on how to make EYB work better for you (updated with EYB new features and helpful articles) is continually updated with new information.

EYB-CKBK not quite working. Where I have a physical book already, and it is on my EYB bookshelf (e.g. Anne Willan – French Regional Cooking) – as well as on ckbk DB, when I list the book’s recipes on EYB, only the first page of EYB results shows the ckbk link. Pages 2-Last appear as before. I have checked this with a few books – same result. The recipes PAST EYB’s 2nd page and later are on the CKBK database – it seems the EYB retrieval and page list code loses the CKBK pointer/link after the first page!

Sorry about that – a bug that will get fixed ASAP.

    • Jane  on  May 12, 2023

The bug is now fixed and all ckbk recipe links are showing.

EYB-CKBK still not quite working. While the loss of the ckbk link past Page 1 of EYB recipe scrolling of book has been fixed (thanks!) – there are still random (?) losses of the link to some recipes. Check out one example – Darina Allen’s ‘Simply Delicious’ book, recipe ‘Ballymaloe Irish Beef Stew’ does not show the ckbk link, but is definitely on the ckbk DB. I haven’t found a pattern for this dropping of links at recipe level yet (ckbk sequencing of recipes different to EYB’s??) – if I do I’ll let you know. (My years as an IT systems architect have made me dogged on IT systems testing! 🙂

We are clearing up the mismatches as quickly as we can. Simply Delicious is now fixed.

Following on from my last ‘bug’ comment – one pattern I see is that the recipes without the ckbk link (incorrectly) on EYB are recipes whose names are annotated with an * on ckbk (not sure why the * – I’ve asked ckbk). If EYB is doing an exact string match on the recipe name, then the ‘*’ on the CKBK side will mean there is no match! I guess the EYB side could ignore a trailing ‘*’ in its string match?

Final comment on the recipe name matching bug – it is a problem with string matching. Example: Book: The Nutmeg Trail. Recipe (EYB) Egyptian “birds’ tongues” soup (no CKBK match) Recipe (in CKBK) EGYPTIAN ‘BIRDS’ TONGUES’ SOUP – the names don’t match because EYB indexer used double quotation marks, CKBK imported digital version with single quotation marks. Result: No string match!
