Does the GBBO musical live up to the show?

The reviews are in for the musical adaptation of The Great British Bake Off, the series that bakers around the world adore. The big question is whether this stage show can live up to the fascinating charm of the television program, which is coming up on its fourteenth anniversary. According to Matt Wolf of The New York Times, the answer is, I am sad to report, “not quite.”

The good news is that the musical does live up to the sweet character of its namesake program. Says Wolf, “the musical’s likability is never in question.” However, just like many of the contestant’s creations, the quality of the program is “underbaked.” The musical score is a hodgepodge, drawing inspiration from various sources but lacking a cohesive feel.

The show’s co-stars bear a striking resemblance to Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, and there are several in-jokes that would probably appeal to the show’s fans. Of course there is plenty of innuendo and double-entendre, just like the television show. The diverse cast likewise echoes the original program, and is probably the strongest part of the show, according to Wolf.

I saw this last weekend. It was really sweet (no pun intended) and a fun show. If you like musicals and GBBO you’ll enjoy it.

I believe that Rachel Bloom may have covered The Holocaust – The Musical with the number “Remember That We Suffered”, performed by Tovah Feldshuh and Broadway great, Patti LuPone in the Bar Mitzvah episode of My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
