This week: Swiss baking titles; Phaidon sale; EYBD previews; giveaway and more

This week I want to share with our Members three books that I am loving right now and two of which are perfect for holiday baking and gift giving.

Swiss Cookies: A Home-Baked Cultural Journey by Andie Pilot is a unique offering filled with exciting recipes. Andie begins with a section on historic Swiss cookies that includes profiles on cookie bakeries/makers. A few cookies in this section are Basler Leckerli, Biberli and Berner Haselnusslebkuchen. Other recipes shared are Pane dei Morti, Prussiens and Guetzlieig. The imagery is beautiful and plentiful and I am loving learning about Swiss baking.

Swiss Bread: A Culinary Journey with 42 Sweet and Savory Recipes by Heddi Nieuwsma is another title that shares stunning photography and a detailed background on Swiss bread. Yeasted cakes, pretzel rolls and a variety of breads from white fluffy loaves to dark hearty loaves are included. The author opens the book with a two page illustrated spread entitled “I need a Swiss bread for”. Examples include a cheese fondue, for instance – and then beneath that lists the bread recipes and page numbers for cheese fondue. Other examples include breads for dessert; gifts; meat and cheese platters; soup and so forth.

Sweet & Swiss: Desserts from the Heart of Europe by Heddi Nieuwsma will be published on January 3rd, 2023 and is filled with desserts that will inspire and surprise your family and friends. Try a Schlorzifladen – a lovely tart made with a dough, pear filling and cream topping or Solothurnerli – gorgeous pastry rings with hazelnut meringue, sponge cake and buttercream frosting.     Schlorzifladen is a Specialty from the region of Toggenburg in the Eastern Part of Switzerland and hardly known outside this region.

    I’m really intrigued, because she is a Canadian who lives in a very rural part of Switzerland and also uses old cookbooks with classic recipes that we as Swiss have long forgotten.
