Top food trends of 2022

As we approach the end of the year, it’s time to reflect on all that has happened in 2022. Jenny keeps us up to date on all of the cookbook happenings, so I am looking more broadly at food trends. Food and Wine recently reminisced on the top TikTok trends for the year. We reported on a couple of these such as charcuterie boards and the follow-on butter boards, but there are several items we didn’t bring to your attention. The number one trend on TikTok was cloud bread, which garnered an astonishing 3.4 billion views overall.

This was followed by baked oats, the aforementioned charcuterie boards, pasta chips, mug cake, birria tacos, pink sauce, cinnamon rolls, nacho tables, and the most recent of the bunch, butter boards. How many of these have you tried? I can only claim cinnamon rolls, and that isn’t because they are trending but because they’re one of my favorite things to bake. If you haven’t tried it, the King Arthur Baking Perfectly pillowy cinnamon rolls (pictured above) is a great recipe.

Over at TastingTable we find a list of their 15 favorite food trends of 2022. The only link between this list and the Food and Wine ranking is butter, but it isn’t butter boards you’ll find here, it is just plain old butter. Well, not plain or old, but fancy, cultured, and European. In addition to creamy dairy, the trends include whole fish, hibiscus, floral lattes, Nigerian foods, Chicago beef sandwiches, dirty sodas, and a few other esoteric items.
