Is it PSL season already?

In much the same way as the holiday shopping season keeps getting enlarged – at some stores, Christmas decorations go up before the Halloween candy is sold out – food seasons seem to be expanding as well. What I call “pumpkin spice creep” contributes to the flavor appearing ever earlier in the year (as well as being added to an ever-growing number of products). It used to be that we in the Northern latitudes would feel autumn’s chill in the air before the ubiquitous PSLs (pumpkin spice lattes) would be on the menu at Starbucks. Now, however, summer’s heat is still blazing when the pumpkin spice products arrive in coffee shops. I have seen advertisements for PSLs and other items for several weeks now, and the temperatures here are anything but autumn-like.

Maybe the season creep is due to the fact that the spice combination is so good that we want to experience it year-round. How else can you explain Food Network Magazine’s Pumpkin spice ice pops? It certainly seems that EYB readers like pumpkin spice, because the Library has over 290 online recipes featuring the blend – and many of them are Member indexed, including some of these recipes buzzing in the Library:

Do you eagerly anticipate pumpkin spice season and enjoy its expansion, or are you more of a “can’t we at least wait until September” person? I’m in the latter camp since I love the summertime and don’t want any reminders of the cold weather that’s on the way (although I do enjoy the flavors).

I find it makes the seasons more special if they are, you know, seasonal. It’s part of what makes the Trader Joe’s seasonal foods special, and the produce at the farmers market, and the ultimate seasonal food, Girl Scout cookies. 🙂 So I’m a fan of waiting. Then again, I’m middle aged and remember having it wait to see TV specials like Rudolph or Wizard of Oz or The Sound of Music, so maybe I’m showing my age. 🙂

My local library is starting a monthly potluck on a specific theme each month. Naturally, October’s theme is pumpkin spice. I found a lot of good recipes from the link to add to my bookshelf. One of my favorites each year is a pumpkin spice cheesecake. I used to bake one and take to work, but now that I’m working from home, it’s a little too much for just me. This time of year, I start to see the Fall decorations and pumpkin spice and get really anxious for Fall. We have cool mornings now where I live, so it’s easy to pretend Fall is already here (as long as I don’t go outside mid-day).

The link to the pumpkin spice muffins from Tutti Dolci is broken (at least on my computer). I checked their webpage and could only find a recipe for pumpkin spice crumb muffins with no pumpkin spice as an ingredient but all the spices that make up a pumpkin spice blend. It sounds yummy!

Thanks valbe – I’ve changed the link to the other pumpkin spice muffin on that site.

Why can’t we wait till summer is over to enjoy PSL. What’s the hurry?

    MONEY?

I haven’t seen any PS-flavored anything since I left the US. Not even during ‘American’ week at my local market.

My local Costco was selling Christmas ribbons 2 weeks ago! Yikes!
