I remember my mom baking bread. I would come home from school and the house would smell so wonderful. In general, my mom was not a great cook……but boy could she bake!!!!

I was 10 when our family drove to New Orleans to see relatives. I had my first taste of real Cajun food! We went back every other year. Enjoyed seeing my cousins but the real treat was the food! Shrimp, crabs and crawfish!!!

My favorite food memory is of visits to my grandmother’s house each summer, when she would make dinner and we would get to eat outside, on her porch.

I have so many! Growing up, I remember the smell of freshly baked bread (my mom used to bake bread every day). But more recently, my husband and I visited New Orleans in 2018. It’s the first time I had shrimp and grits (for breakfast!), and it was a flavor explosion! Every time I cook Cajun food at home, I’m taken back to our trip to NOLA!

I have many, but two stand out at the moment:

Helping my German grandmother make stollen at Christmas time – I think it was the last Christmas she was with us. She died when I was 7. I wish I had the recipe.

Eating kokorec in a late-night, open-air restaurant in Antalya, Turkey, before heading down to the harbor with some beers and a bottle of raki to sit on the wall and watch the moon rise over the Mediterranean.

My favorite food memory is the first cake I baked from scratch and what a revelation it was that it was just as fast as a cake mix.

  • sayeater  on  July 7, 2022

I just acted on one this past weekend. My dad’s favorite cake was devils food with a cooked caramel frosting. He also used to love summer, picnics and any outdoor celebrations. I was especially missing him this past 4th of July weekend so I made his cake for a taste memory of fun times together<3

I’ll add another New Orleans memory. We went for our honeymoon 40 years ago. The food was heavenly and we ate so much that at the end of the week our clothing no longer fit.

  • MarciK  on  August 5, 2022

I have so many wonderful food memories, but I want to tell about this fond memory, not because of the great food but because it so well represents my family. One night my dad was cooking, something he only does when there is something unusual he wants to try. I asked my mom what we’re having for dinner. She said my dad was making muskrat, but if it didn’t taste good, we’ll go to McDonald’s. I never did get to taste the muskrat. We ended up going to McDonald’s in the end, but my dad still insists the muskrat was good. My father and I have always been more adventurous cooks. My mom and sister not so much.

During a day of casually roaming around Florence with my husband, we stopped into a tiny restaurant for lunch. Three women were cooking in a kitchen the size of my closet, producing magical food. I had a super simple leek risotto that is the single best thing I have ever eaten. It was also so inexpensive I thought there was a mistake on the bill.

I can not make sauce today, as he use Chef Boyardee canned pasta sauce I can not find anymore and nothing tastes the same. Plus he used polish kielbasa in it and I am now allergic to pork. While I watched him make it dozens of times, I wish I could have it again.
