Here we are in March which came in like a lion and went out like a lamb as many titles were moved further down the pipeline. That being said, there are still a plethora of fantastic books for our enjoyment released this month. Please be sure to keep checking the 2022 preview post for updates.

How this woman makes a naan breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs and honey seem like a work of genius is beyond me, but I am grateful she does. Karavan Kitchen by Soraya Beheshti is packed with recipes for a wide range of Middle Eastern vegan dishes. This title provides an evocative introduction to the many diverse cultures of the region and an eye-opening and compelling examination of the refugee crises caused by the conflicts in Syria, Libya, Yemen, and Somalia. Beheshti demonstrates how food is often the central connection that many refugees have to their native countries and a means of creating community even when forced to live in difficult conditions many miles from home.

Korean American: A Cookbook by Eric Kim is a gorgeous collection of 85 recipes but the true value here is the author’s narrative. Essays ranging from the life-changing act of leaving home and coming back, to what Thanksgiving means to a first-generation family both conceptually and culinarily – all while teaching readers about the Korean pantry, the history of Korean immigration in America, and the importance of white rice in Korean cuisine. Kim divides up these recipes as follows: TV Dinners (food to eat in front of the tv); Kimchi is a verb; S is for Stew; Rice cuisine; Garden of Jean (vegetables); Korea is a peninsula; Feasts; and Korean bakery. The Art of Pantry Cooking: Meals for Family and Friends by Ronda Carman: I love when I am pleasantly surprised by a cookbook. Just as with “boards” having their moment, pantry cooking has risen from the ashes of the last few years of quarantine life. However, this book is truly special. Taking 30 pantry staples, Carman delivers inspired dishes that range from Espresso lentil brownies, Clementine and pistachio couscous breakfast bowls to a Polenta and pork ragu.

Serafina: Modern Italian Cuisine for Everyday Home Cooking by Vittorio Assaf, Fabio Granato and Lavinia Branca Snyder: The story behind the birth of the Serafina restaurant is an unusual one. Assaf and Granato were lost at sea and battling violent weather and hunger for nine hours.     I really liked the idea of trying some of the gluten free sourdough baking recipes, but the preview pages all specify a quantity of active starter – clearly, the recipe for this is elsewhere in the book, so not possible to trial those recipes…
