Food news antipasto

We start off this week with some sad news. Sally Schmitt, one of the founders of the pioneering Napa Valley restaurant the French Laundry, has died at the age of 90. Schmitt was the original chef and owner of the restaurant, which “drew a fervent following for simple, French-inspired food made with local, seasonal ingredients.” She had an outsized influence on the northern California dining scene. Schmitt spent several years writing a cookbook and memoir, Six California Kitchens: A Collection of Recipes, Stories, and Cooking Lessons From a Pioneer of California Cuisine. The book is scheduled to be released on April 5.

Great British Bake Off fan favorite Lizzie Acker has been keeping busy in the kitchen and out, posting many videos on Instagram with fellow contestant Freya Cox, but that’s not all. Recently she sat down for an interview with Eater’s Dayna Evans, where she discussed what it was like in the GBBO tent, dishing on backstage events and more.

How far would you go for a good meal? How about Greenland? That’s where the world’s most remote Michelin-starred restaurant is headed next. Formerly located on the Faroe Islands between Iceland and Scotland, the restaurant known as KOKS will be relocating to Greenland for the summers of 2022 and 2023. KOKS at the Ilimanaq Lodge on Greenland’s west coast will be serving diners from June 12 through September 8.

Toaster ovens are handy appliances that are perfect for small households and for cooking small quantities of foods. What isn’t small about them is the mess: they get as dirty as a regular oven, but even more quickly if my experience is near the average. There isn’t a self-clean feature on these petite appliances, so keeping them looking good can be a challenge. The crew at America’s Test Kitchen is here to help, offering the best way to make your toaster oven shine like new.

I see hundreds, if not thousands, of food images in my social media feeds each week. For something to stand out in that barrage, it really has to be extraordinary. This week the photo that jolted me out of my baking doldrums was the image of the Filled wool roll (above) from King Arthur Baking. It not only looks good, it sounds delicious. What recipe tickled your fancy this week?
