This week: Mochi donuts, recipe comments, 2022 cookbook news, previews, giveaways and more
February 18, 2022 by JennyIn my social media feed this week, I came across this satire post poking fun at the sometimes funny, often annoying comments that are written on recipe content. In particular, the author created a treasure trove of comments that mimic similar comments left on New York Times recipes for Homestyle Spaghetti Carbonara. Note: there are several recipes for carbonara on the NY Times’ site, but I could not locate one for a “homestyle” version.

Is it OK to use Romano cheese instead of Parmesan? And if I don’t have spaghetti on hand, can I just use fish?
While I understand that genuine comments made on certain posts are meant to be “funny” (everyone wants their 15 minutes right?), there are many instances when comments such as “can I make this vegan” or “I deleted three of the five ingredients and the recipe was not edible” are serious. See: Let’s call the whole thing off and Food, times are changing and the importance of our words. (If you ever have free time, read some of the reviews on this banana slicer on Amazon.)
As I write the above, I realize my hypocrisy when I recalled my Facebook post today: “Podcasts = the new kale”. I was being sarcastic as it seems that everyone has a podcast or wants to do a podcast. I should take my own advice and not yuck someone’s yum. Why join the fray of dissent? Is it my human nature to be judgmental or is it worse because I’ve been in a state of limbo the last few years? Yes, I’ll blame COVID for my behavior.
This week, I added a load of new books to the 2022 preview post including books coming from Chris Scott (a fav of mine from Top Chef); Homage: Recipes and Stories from an Amish Soul Food Kitchen; last year’s GBBO winner Giuseppe Dell’Anno’s Giuseppe’s Italian Bakes: 60 Inspired Recipes Like Papa Used to Make and GBBO’s vegan baker Freya Cox Simple Vegan Baking; Kate Reid’s Lune: Eating Croissants All Day, Every Day (Lune is famous for their croissants in Australia); Phil Rosenthal’s Somebody Feed Phil the Book; and Isa Chandra Moskowitz’ Fake Meat: Real Food for Vegan Appetites. There are loads more to check out on the preview and a few covers are shared above (note the first two covers are the UK and US versions of Ixta Belfrage‘s upcoming book). Other GBBO contestants have titles coming out so check out those; I keep Which Great British Bake Off Contestants have written books updated.
Do you know about Mochi donuts? Recently, I stopped at Mochinut in Denver and picked up six to-die-for donuts. I am huge fan of Asian flavors in both savory and sweet preparations so I am thrilled with the number of Asian related baking books that have been published or are slated for publication, and covered a few on this roundup. Our featured online recipe is for mochi donuts from the blog of Australian Catherine Zhang who was a contestant on Zumbo’s Just Desserts (season 2). I am excited that she has a cookbook coming this November. Her 36 page guide to the perfect macaron can be purchased for $6.99 and it looks stellar. Have any of you made Mochi donuts at home?
Lastly, a reminder from last week’s roundup: Diaspora is offering our EYB members 12% off any orders using the code: DiasporaEYB (expires on Mar 31st, 2022).
