The last two weeks: Lunar New Year recipes; Spring cookbook preview; and more

Last month, Darcie shared Get ready to celebrate the year of the tiger with a link to 35 Lunar New Year foods at Epicurious (see our article about the paywall). I was still able to access 3 recipes on their site before the paywall information came up. (People are able to access 3 recipes a month for free).

Lucky 8 stir fry by Hsiao-Ching Chou

Many of the foods eaten by Chinese families over Lunar New Year have special significance, believed to bring luck, prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead. Favorites including dumplings (the more dumplings eaten, the more money will follow in the new year), noodles (longevity noodles for long life) and spring rolls (wealth and prosperity).

We have nearly 4,000 online links to Asian noodle recipes; 237 online links to spring rolls; and 732 online links for dumplings or potstickers (these links do not include Epicurious but other paywalls may be connected to some of these recipes) and a total of 5,646 online recipes to Asian recipes.

I received an ingredient bundle from my friend at Hardcover Cook to create Betty Liu’s sticky rice balls and plan to make them this weekend. There are 9 online recipes from Betty’s book My Shanghai you may try now.

Chinese Soul Food and Vegetarian Chinese Soul Food by Hsiao-Ching Chou are both great books to introduce a cook to Chinese cooking (22 of the author’s recipes are available online). Both books will be coming out in paperback versions on March 22nd and we will link these to the master titles on that date. So if you missed picking up the books when they were published the first time around, now is the time.

Hsiao-Ching is the chair on the James Beard Book Awards Committee of which I am honored to be a member and it has been great fun getting to work with her more closely. On the James Beard front, I was able to pull Darcie in as a judge this year so we both (and Jane) will be going to the awards ceremony in June.

Lastly, Mooncakes and Milk Bread (back in stock at most booksellers and HCC has a great bundle which will be available soon), Jason Licker‘s titles and Modern Asian Baking at Home (Jun 28th, 2022 – preview) are just a few of the Asian baking related titles that are favorites. We have a number of Asian baking titles in our EYB Library.
