Cookbooks just for kicks

What do you look for when you are shopping for a cookbook? For some of us it’s one that introduces us to a cuisine with stories and recipes. Others might want something with a lot of step-by-step photos, especially in a baking book. What about just buying one for chuckles and grins? There are some books that we likely will never cook from, yet they can be entertaining to read or a great conversation starter. One recent release that falls in this category is Cook It, Spill It, Throw It: The Not-So-Real Housewives Parody Cookbook by chef Stuart O’Keeffe and comedian Amy Phillips. According to Mashed, this isn’t a quickie tie-in, but something that the authors worked on for over two years.

O’Keeffe and Phillips are both longtime fans of the Real Housewives franchise, and in this homage to the shows, the pair have created an inviting menu served with a side of delicious snark. Inspired by the series and its stars, the dishes are accompanied by sidebars and cameos by the Housewives themselves, who share their own hilarious commentary.

Another cookbook that I owned just for kicks was Manifold Destiny: The One! the Only! Guide to Cooking on Your Car Engine! My husband and I used to do weekend racing (he wrenched, I drove), and a friend thought we might enjoy the book. It was a hoot to read, although I never tried cooking anything on the engine. One more book that I never cooked from but that made me chuckle a lot was Al Sicherman’s Caramel Knowledge: Bostess Bupcakes, Peanut Butter Coffee, Herring in a Cloud, Weinie Zucchini and Much More Food and Culinary Musings for the Twisted Mind. What cookbooks have you purchased for the fun of it?

I bought the World of Warcraft cookbook because I love playing thought it would be an interesting take on the “cooking” skill. Turns out, I like cooking from it made better by the fun theme

We are geeks (and proud), so…The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook (really good!), the D&D cookbook that came out last year (Heroes’ Feast), a couple of Hobbit-themed cookbooks, an Anne of Green Gables cookbook… and there’s an upcoming Gatsby party cookbook that I’ve preordered for our oldest for Christmas.

And how could I forget? My husband has owned Wookiee Cookies (Star Wars cookbook) for ages. We’ve done kid parties from it, and Yoda Soda is quite a hit.

I recently bought “Eat Something: A Wise Sons Cookbook for Jews Who Like Food and Food Lovers Who Like Jews” to give as a gift to a family member. It is definitely more of a kicks book, lots of old pictures, anecdotes and humor.

“Once Upon a Kitchen” by Leslie Bilderback is a gem. “inspired by classic books, movies and TV shows. She draws from sources as rich and varied as The Lord of the Rings, Arabian Nights, the Star Wars saga, Grimm’s fairy tales, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the Potterverse.” A fantastic book for nerds of all kinds and their children.
