What’s your favorite GBBO recipe?

Now that those in the UK have been able to get their GBBO fix and others are but a few days away, it is time to revisit some of our favorite recipes from the GBBO, as The Telegraph has done. Since that article is behind a paywall (and I have already used my free trial), I will share my favorites and ask that you do the same so we can all find something new to try.

I am always tuned into the technical challenges because they provide a terrific opportunity to learn about classic bakes, some that I already knew but many of which expanded my baking horizons. Povitica was one I hadn’t seen before but became enamored with, and placed in on my “must try” list. Here is where I must sheepishly admit that I have not, in fact, made povitica yet, but in all fairness my “must try” baking list is longer than a CVS receipt.

For the showstopper bakes I was drawn to Candice Brown’s winning ‘Queen Victoria’ strawberry and mango meringue crown. In signature bakes, my favorites include each and every Battenberg cake made by the contestants – I love the idea of a surprise pattern inside a gorgeously decorated cake. Another signature bake I tucked away for later was Dave’s caramel latte custard slices (pictured above). Which recipes from the GBBO have resonated with you?

We have a nice selection of Online Recipes from the GBBO books. Browsing through the one that leapt out at me was Prue’s Le gâteau vert which I’m now trying to remember whether it was ever in a show. Quite a few of the recipes are from the GBBO books so may not have been on a show.

I used to like the GBBO a lot, but in recent years I prefer the Canadian spin off. The hosts (Ann Pornel and Shane Allen Lewis) hit the right notes, and the judges are great, especially Bruno. I make quite a few of their recipes; my favourite is the Montreal bagels from the first season which I’ve made quite frequently.

There was one years ago, that Prue said was the best cake she’d ever eaten… I believe it was Ruby’s chocolate orange cake that I bookmarked. I’m also wanting to try Prue’s Le gâteau vert. I think that was from 2018 and I’ve probably had it bookmarked since then and have yet to make it.

I am wrong…. it’s Kate’s sticky toffee caramel apple cake that was Prue’s favorite she’s ever tasted and asked the recipe from – this was season 4 and Kate was the baker :

The recipe that sticks in my mind is Kate’s sticky toffee apple cake. I haven’t attempted it yet though. Would also love to make Dave’s caramel latte custard slices. I’ve also been inspired to make (or put on my lengthy must-try list) many of the British classics that aren’t common in the USA, such as savory pies (have tried a few, but not hand-raised pork pies yet), battenbergs (not yet!), various puddings (e.g., Queen of Puddings), Victoria sandwich, various buns, etc. I love learning about traditional recipes we don’t have here.

I have made Alvin Magallanes’ Prosciutto, Manchego and balsamic onion soda bread (season 6, episode 3) time and again. It got a Paul Hollywood handshake, and we know how rare those are. Even when I don’t think it turned out quite right, it get’s raves. I do double the basil, and prosciutto is typically available in 7 oz packages here and I use the entire package.
I’ve also made a number of Nadiya Hussein’s (2015 winner) recipes from her ‘Time to Eat’ series. Her Peanut Chicken Tray Bake and Chicken Shawarma are in my permanent rotation.

We haven’t done a recipe, but two technical challenges have sent us off to bakeries. The best kouign-amann has been from Dozen Bakery in Nashville, TN. According to Wikipedia, the GBBO technical challenge inspired U.S. bakeries to start making kouign-amann. The best princess cake has been from Saga Pastry + Sandwiches in Henderson, NV.
