Sumac – Cookbook Giveaway
June 7, 2021 by JennyEnter our US/UK/AU giveaway to win one of four copies of Sumac: Recipes and Stories from Syria by Anas Atassi.
Sumac includes over 90 recipes inspired by Atassi’s family recipes and travels, as well as the stories, celebrations and memories of loved ones in Syria that inspired the recipes. It includes the wonderful Friday breakfasts he’d eat in his grandmother’s garden, his mother’s sfeeha, along with the falafel he now loves to make for his friends, along with many other mezze, salads, meats, vegetables, and desserts. Sumac is the vibrant gem of the spice world and this book artfully captures the brilliance and beauty of the cuisine of Syria.
Our takes you inside this beautiful book and features the following
- Forgotten date cake
- Eggplant and beef pilaf (Makloube)
- Beef sausage with garlic and pistachios (Mortadella from Aleppo)
- Spicy roasted cauliflower (Zahra)
- Aunt Jinan’s bulgur salad (Itsch salad)
- Stuffed parsnips in tomato sauce (Mahshi el jazar)
- Chicken shish kebabs (Shish tawook)
I’m sure there are some cooks who shy away from books that feature the cuisine of other countries. They may think it would be hard to find certain ingredients or the palates of their family might not appreciate the dishes contained in these books. We have Ottolenghi to thank for bringing a generation of people to the Middle Eastern table.
Sumac contains recipes that are relatable and approachable including Ashta – Syrian-style ricotta cheese; Toasted sandwiches with spicy meat and cheese; Sabankh bil roz – stew of spinach and ground beef and Walnut baklava. I had to look through the book three times to find a recipe that would be out of my comfort zone and could not find one. Embrace the cuisine of other countries and open yourself up to a world of flavor.
Special thanks to Interlink for providing two copies in the US and Murdoch for providing two copies open to the UK and Australia. Entry options include answering the following question in the comments section of this blog post.
