November 8, 2020 by DarcieI participated in the Bake a Bundt online class offered by Bake from Scratch Magazine’s Brian Hart Hoffman, Williams-Sonoma, and Nordic Ware. During the class, Nordic Ware’s Jennifer Dahlquist announced that in connection with Nordic Ware’s 75th Anniversary – happening in 2021 – the company will be making several special, limited edition Bundt pans. They will be offered first (or possibly in some cases, exclusively) through Williams-Sonoma. Remember that you heard it here first.
Almost lost in the chaos of 2020 is the fact that this year marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which extended the voting franchise to women (initially white women were the only beneficiaries of the amendment due to disenfranchisement of minority communities). To celebrate the milestone, the folks at Lodge, which tops the nation in cast iron sales, have created a limited edition Rosie the Riveter skillet. The pan is embossed with a relief of the iconic Rosie the Riveter image that graced posters in WWII. You can order one from the Lodge website for the low price of $19.20.
We again have sad news to report this week. Former season five GBBO contest Luis Troyano has died at the age of 48 from esophageal cancer. Luis was a fan favorite and tributes from former GBBO contestants and hosts poured in once the news of his death was announced. Sue Perkins wrote: “Gutted to hear of the passing of @luistroyano He was a gentleman and I was very lucky to share a tent with him.”
If the thought of preparing a holiday dinner this year is causing stress, we have an event for you to bookmark. The New York Times is hosting an online event titled “How to Cook Thanksgiving During the Pandemic.” Participants include Sam Sifton, Melissa Clark, Priya Krishna and Vaughn Vreeland. The November 10 event will include a “surprising new side dish” as well as a discussion of the challenges of hosting during a pandemic.
A lot of us have turned to baking as a way to destress and pass the time during lockdown. Not surprisingly, this has led to a “quaratine 15” weight gain for many as well. If you want to bake but also want to be more healthy, Good Food (Aus) has some tips and tricks on how to bake healthier cakes and cookies. These tips will allow you to cut down on fat and sugar while still making great-tasting bakes.
