Jikoni Cookbook Giveaway
October 11, 2020 by JennyEnter our US/UK giveaway to win one of three copies of Jikoni: Proudly Inauthentic Recipes from an Immigrant Kitchen by Ravinder Bhogal.
Jikoni resonates with joy. Look at the cover it is stunning. I am one who loves beautiful imagery and this vibrant introduction was all I needed to know that Jikoni was going to be filled with a cacophony of flavors and inspirational dishes.
Jikoni means kitchen in Kiswahili, the language of Kenya, where the author was born. She lived in a house built by her grandfather who had left Punjab in the 1940s looking for work but fell in love with the landscape and settled there.
At any time there could be between fifteen and twenty-five people in their family home at one time. With a crowd of this size, every woman and girl was enlisted to help with mealtime. This was Ravinder’s introduction to the “secret language of cooks” learning to use all her senses to create meals with her family.
The dishes here are “proudly inauthentic” and include such recipes as Kimchi parathas, Cornbread with creamed corn, eggs, and green chilli relish, and Pina colada pancakes in the breakfast chapter alone. These examples reflect the delicious chaos that is shared in this beautiful book that made my best books of 2020 list.
Our takes you inside this beautiful book and features the following
- Spicy aubergine salad with peanuts, herbs, eggs and jaggery fox nuts
- Kimchi royals
- Lamb and aubergine fatteh
- Cauliflower popcorn with black vinegar dipping sauce
- Levantine salmon tartare with pickled fennel and labneh
- Keralan crab-stuffed courgette flowers with coriander chutney
- Skate with lime pickle brown butter, tempura samphire and nori
- Lemongrass poussin with green mango and peanut salad
- Banana cake with miso butterscotch and Ovaltine kulfi
- Turkish Delight trifles with pashmak
Everyone needs to experience the gentle beauty of this author’s written words and I feel sad for anyone that doesn’t bring the magical recipes of Jikoni into their own kitchen. Jikoni is the type of book that lifts my spirits and excites me to cook and create.
