Buzz about the Great British Bake Off 2020

I think we are all in need of some good news and something to look forward to, which is why I was excited to see a blurb about the Great British Bake Off in my news feed. In January we reported that GBBO host Sandi Toksvig was not going to be a co-host on the upcoming season of the show (known as Great British Baking Show in the US). At the time we did not know who was going to replace her, but today we found out. It’s going to be Matt Lucas, a British comedian best known for creating and starring in the satirical sketch show Little Britain (which incidentally is one of my all-time favorite programs). In a statement, Lewis said: “I can’t wait to break bread with Noel [Fielding], Prue [Leith] and Paul [Hollywood] and meet the brilliant bakers.” I can’t wait either. It will be interesting to see if he and Noel develop a good working chemistry.

Last season’s contestants.

The judges for the show are both sticking around. We’ll get to see Paul Hollywood’s steely blue stare intimidating the baker’s dozen contestants, and Prue Leith will also be there enjoying the treats – especially the boozy ones. While Channel 4 hasn’t announced the exact start date, based on the previous seasons we can surmise that 25 August will be the first day we can all get cozy on the sofa and tune in to see the camaraderie and the exquisite bakes.

Some fans (including me) thought that the 2019 season was a bit off the mark. When reviewing week 9 (Patisserie week), Jenny lamented this change, saying “while I’ll never stop watching The Great British Bake Off (I just can’t quit it), each week it loses more charm. It’s gone from Prince Charming to Mr. That’ll Do. It seems to me that the show I loved has transformed into a hectic reality type hour.” I felt like we did not get to know the bakers as well, as the show seemed to spend more time on “Sandi in a bag” jokes than on the back stories of the contestants. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that GBBO gets back on track in 2020.

So excited for the new season to show here in Australia (we usually get it in January, so currently watching the 2019 season, it was the desserts week episode this week). I so wish that we could watch it the same time as the US and UK!

I miss the old presenters, so maybe this will be a positive change.

Mmm, not sure about this. I like Matt Lucas as a comedian but wish they had chosen another woman. My #1 pick would be Jo Brand who does An Extra Slice, the GBBO after-show, which I so wish we got in the USA – it’s so funny. You can see some clips on YouTube. It’s Noel I think is a waste of space. Though I love this show so much I am willing it to succeed.

I watched some clips and now I also wish we could get An Extra Slice.
