EYB Cookbook Club News – Plant-Based Cooking Options

Our food-loving community at Eat Your Books shares notes, tips, and reviews on recipes in our library as well as on our active member forum.

Another place where we share our love of cooking is in our Eat Your Books Cookbook Club on Facebook. Every month we share our successes and fails in cooking and baking from specific cookbook titles.

A few members have asked for a plant-based option each month. We think this is a wonderful idea. For March, we are asking our members to share their photos along with the recipe and cookbook title from their favorite vegan or plant-based cookbooks.

For our April’s option, please leave a comment on this blog post before March 20th nominating your favorite plant-based or vegan cookbook. On March 20th, I will tally the results and announce the cookbook on our end of the month summary post.

In my next poll in the group when we choose May through July options, I will be sure to include plant-based cookbooks in the voting options. As always, you can add your suggestions for books other than those listed in the poll.

Lastly, as food waste is a very important issue we all work on resolving, we’d also like our members to share leftover ideas for the recipes they try (if there are any!) every month.

We look forward to cooking with you.

I recommend any of Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s books. I see the most popular vegan book amongst members is the classic Veganomicon and she has a few in the most popular 10. My favourite are Isa Does It and Superfun Times. She also has a good website https://www.theppk.com/books/

I have and would like to explore the following plant- based cookbooks: East by Meera Sodha; Cool Beans by Joe Yonan; Family by Hetty McKinnon; and Good Veg by Alice Hart. I’d also love to dig into any Deborah Madison books!

My favourite cookbook is Community by Hetty McKinnon. This was my first proper vegetarian cookbook and made the transition very easy as meaty bits could be added separately for the rest if the family. I highly recommend this book.

Vegetable Kingdom by Bryant Terry, Vegetables Unleashed by Jose Andres, Pescan by Abby Cornish and Jacqueline King, Vegan for Everybody by America’s Test Kitchen, anything by Deborah Madison

I’m also a big fan of Deborah Madison, and suggest an oldie but goodie – Vegetarian Suppers. Another option I like is Angela Liddon’s “Oh She Glows”, and you can find some of her recipes online for those who don’t have the book.

Fast Fresh and Green by Susie Middleton is an excellent vegetable cookbook. I have also enjoyed River Cottage Veg by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, and his book on leftovers called Love your Leftovers is very useful.
Thanks Jenny for incorporating these ideas into the cookbook club!

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s Much more veg is a fantastic vegan cookbook.
    Both of Amy Chaplin’s books.
Deborah Madison’s Vegetable Literacy (and all the others, too).
    Denis Cotter: Love Food

I like Nava Atlas’s books, especially 5-Ingredient Vegan and Plant Power. Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s cookbooks are great — I am currently working through Isa Does It. I also like Robin Robertson’s cookbooks (Quick Fix Vegan and Fresh from the Vegan Slow Cooker) and the Forks over Knives cookbooks.
