November 4, 2019 by JennyEnter to win a copy of Pasta Grannies: The Secrets of Italy’s Best Home Cooks by Vicky Bennison with one grand prize winner receiving a 5.25 quart Opus Cupra covered braiser from Ruffoni. Don’t forget to leave a blog comment on our October New Cookbook Review to win a surprise package of cookbooks open worldwide.
Pasta Grannies: The Secrets of Italy’s Best Home Cooks is one of the crown jewels in a year packed with gems. If you have not subscribed to the Pasta Grannies YouTube channel, you will definitely want to do that. Videos feature the beautiful grandmothers doing what they do best – making homemade pasta with hands lined with experience, wisdom, and love. The grannies generously share their craft with those who long to learn, both in their videos and in this book.
Filled with lovely photographs and profiles of the ladies, this title will become a family heirloom. The recipes cannot be found in other cookbooks as they are obtained directly from the Italian women who have made them for years.
Olga’s canederli (bread dumplings that originated from leftovers of previous meals), Giuseppa’s fingernail pasta with tomato sauce, and Gaia’s culurgiones with tomato sauce are just a few examples of what you will find in this book. Our will take you inside Pasta Grannies and shares the following
- Rosa’s “straw” and “hay” tagliatelle with peas
- Ada’s taglioli and bean soup
- Rosa’s spinach and ricotta gnudi
- Rachele’s maccheroni a descita with cuttlefish
- Cornelia’s pansoti with walnut pesto
- Maria’s raschiatelli with red peppers
While preparing for this promotion, I chose several dishes to make debating which one I wanted to make first. I ended up making Franca’s classic lasagna from Bologna with every component made from scratch. One weekend I made the bolognese and served it with pasta and Focaccia di Recco for guests and several days later I rolled the pasta for the lasagna and whipped up the bechamel. I enjoyed every second of putting this dish together and my husband declared it was better than any lasagna he had ever had.
While the Pasta Grannies cookbook is sure to become a family heirloom, so will your pieces of Ruffoni‘s fine cookware. I have mentioned in previous posts that I’ve had guests remark on how special they felt when I brought dinner to the table in this cookware. I try to set a nice table and make my friends and family feel treasured. Pay no attention to the red plastic cups in the photo above, I have not found my glassware since we’ve moved. (There are still a dozen bins in the garage). Despite the plastic glassware, our guests raved about the meal and were eyeing my cookware. I treasure our friends but they better not ask to borrow my Ruffoni, I don’t treasure them that much.
As I have mentioned in previous posts (here and here), Ruffoni makes gorgeous cookware where the style matches the substance and quality of their work. The covered braiser was a joy to cook the bolognese in but I was worried about how it would clean up. I was sure I would be soaking and re-soaking the pot to get the cooked-on sauce out. Not so, one pot full of hot soapy water and ten minutes later everything just rinsed away. I dried the pot thoroughly and it looks brand new.
Ruffoni is family made and they believe that the table is where we all join together to create memories. I am of the same mindset. I love feeding family and friends and I love doing it with beautiful food cooked and served in stunning cookware. Check out Walter Ruffoni’s chapter in the Ruffoni Way series on YouTube. Williams-Sonoma has a dedicated page to Ruffoni cookware.
If you are interested in the Opus Cupra line or any Ruffoni piece, the best place to learn more is at Ruffoni site. You can just get in touch with the company via their email service@ruffoni.net from anywhere in the world and they will be sure to help.
