Sababa – Cookbook Giveaway
October 8, 2019 by JennyEnter to win a copy of Sababa: Fresh, Sunny Flavors from My Israeli Kitchen by Adeena Sussman. Please take note of the author’s Events to see if she is in your area.
Adeena has co-authored a number of cookbooks and wrote Tahini for Short Stack Editions. In Sababa her enthusiasm for food shines brightly and like Michael Solomonov’s Israeli Soul, I want to get lost in its pages:
Between the covers of Israeli Soul lies a whirlwind experience that is wrought by the passion of the authors’ love of Israel.
There are books that make you want to cook, then there is this book that makes you want to live. When our days are filled with stressful world news and obligations, an escape into another world is just the balm needed for our weary souls.
It is a rare gift indeed to be able to produce a cookbook that transports the reader to a place of joy. Michael and Adeena have that gift.
Sababa is Hebrew for basically “everything is awesome” and the title reflects the contents. 125 brilliant recipes bring Israeli kitchen staples such as tahini, sumac, silan (date syrup), harissa, za’atar to our table, while also presenting more exotic spices and ingredients. Adeena’s vibrant recipes reflect the way she cooks daily in her Tel Aviv kitchen.
Adeena is a story-teller. We travel with her as she makes her way to the Carmel Market or “the shuk”. We smell the ocean breeze, we trod carefully on the freshly rinsed sidewalks and look over the wealth of herbs and produce as she shops. She came to Israel for love (her husband Jay) and she stayed for the shuk. I do not blame her. Her shuk makes my trips to the King Sooper seem so incredibly sad.
The Crispy sesame schnitzel, Shabakia (fried dough cookies dipped in a tea- honey- and jasmine-laced syrup, Everything beigele, Za-atar chili feta bread, Chewy tahini blondies, and Israeli street corn are just a small sampling of the recipes I have tagged to make. Full-page photographs bring these dishes to life.
With Adeena’s guidance, we can tackle even the “weekend project alert” Kubaneh bread with all the fixings. My dinner of miso rice with steak and snap peas was looking really good until I started going through this book again. We definitely have to cook through Sababa in our EYB Cookbook Club!
