Chefs and food writers make a big impact
April 21, 2018 by DarcieFood writers and chefs have always had an impact on the culinary scene, shaping tastes and imparting wisdom about food and cooking. For decades that influence remained in a relatively small sphere with only a handful of people gaining broader recognition. Thanks to the rise of food television, followed by the explosion of social media and blogs on the internet, many more culinary stars have nationwide or even worldwide recognition.
While they have continued to write about food and opened well-regarded restaurants, a few of these writers and chefs have expanded beyond these boundaries, earning accolades in the process. In the past week, these accolades have included a Pulitzer Prize and inclusion on Time Magazine’s list of most influential people.
Julia Moskin and Kim Severson of The New York Times shared in the newspaper’s Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for their coverage of the #MeToo movement. Moskin and Severson shared in the prize for their writing about sexual harassment in the restaurants of Ken Friedman and April Bloomfield.
Chef José Andrés was named to Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people of 2018. He was honored for his tireless efforts in providing meals to people in areas like Haiti and Puerto Rico following devastating natural disasters. His organization, World Central Kitchen, has provided meals and education to millions over the past few years. Andrés We Fed an Island will be released this Fall sharing his story about his foundation’s efforts in Puerto Rico.
