Celebrating another milestone

We are pleased to announce that we have reached 7,000 indexed books in the EYB Library! Combined, the number of recipes inside these books exceeds 1.2 million – a mind-boggling number. To save you from doing the math, that is an average of 175 recipes per book. Some weighty tomes have more than 1,000 recipes.

Among these large volumes, the reference book Larousse Gastronomique contains a whopping 3,887 recipes, the most from any one book. For regular cookbooks the most is Joy of Cooking (1975) at 3,131, then Joy of Cooking (2006) with 2,936 recipes, and finally Joy of Cooking (1997) with 2,547. We have indexed 8,614 Joy of Cooking recipes! Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything (10th Anniversary Edition) has 2,658 recipes and How to Cook Everything Vegetarian has 2,254. The Cook’s Illustrated Cookbook has 2,017. On the other end of the spectrum, one cookbook has only one recipe: Squeaky Cheese: The Ultimate Guide to Making Finnish Leipäjuusto.

Let’s give a cheer to all of the indexers, including our hardworking staff and EYB Members. We appreciate the tremendous contributions made by our Members – they account for 35% of the books indexed in the last year! One dedicated Member, Astrid5555, has indexed 123 books so far. She has worked her way through her English language books and is now starting on her cookbooks in German

You can request to index a book yourself (it isn’t very difficult and most Members who do this end up doing more than one book) or you can request that EYB index it. Older or more obscure books are placed into the queue for indexing according to number of requests, so make sure you submit a request for any books you would like to see indexed.

I had already noticed Astrid5555 great contribution. Up to yesterday she had a book on each of the last four pages of just indexed books. Surely she could pass on some tips to make us all quicker. e.g. Has she got a stand of some sort that holds the book at a good angle while you type; what do you do with the books that are bound so tight that they slam shut between recipes and you really need 3 arms, one to hold book open and two to type.

Wow, I had no idea. Thank you for including me! In terms of my indexing process I index on my iPad which I actually also use to hold the book open. I have only just recently started using the shortcut codes, which makes indexing much faster. I have also developed my own indexing routine, which works for me but is probably not for everyone. I start with just indexing one recipe after another, and if I am not clear on something, e.g. a recipe type, etc. I just make a comment for myself in the indexer notes. Once I am finished I check the spelling of the recipe titles and read through the recipes as I imagine Sydney would, just making sure it sounds plausible, e.g. is the recipe really vegan, did I miss anything from the comments, etc. and also research everything not clear to me when I initially indexed the recipes. At last I go through every recipe once more, this time making sure that I did not miss any ingredients or used the wrong ones. Hope this helps a little.

Thank you, Astrid5555 for taking the time from your indexing to set out your routine so clearly. I do use an ipad but wondered if I might see a longer list of ingredients if I was to use a computer. I musr make an effort to learn the shortcuts. This year I have taken the easy way out, and have just been adding page numbers to books that were indexed before page numbers for books were introduced. A much more relaxing pastime!
