Looking back at 2016 in food

As the year draws to a close, people have a tendency to become introspective. While 2016 may not be anyone’s favorite year for a number of reasons, instead of dwelling on the negative let’s reflect on the positive when it comes to food online. In a minute we’ll list EYB Members’ top picks for cookbook sample recipe collection, but first we’ll inspect what others found tasty this year.

We’ll begin with Food52’s Top 10 Genius Recipes of 2016. Comfort foods took center stage here, with entries like Ruth Reichl’s grilled cheese and a genius one pan lasagna. Moving over to Food Republic, we find a couple of lists: the top 20 vegetarian recipes and the 20 most popular recipes of 2016. For the former, you’ll find items like skillet-roasted cauliflower steaks and beet butter linguine. The latter list includes Korean steak tartare and Mussels marinière quiche. It’s interesting to note that the 20 most popular recipes include several vegetarian dishes that didn’t make the other list.

Indexed blog The Kitchn focuses on one ingredient with their top 20 chicken recipes of 2016. There you’ll discover recipes like rotisserie chicken coconut curry soup and Arnold Palmer pan-roasted chicken thighs. The Observer (UK) took a slightly different tack by including an article about what several food celebrities such as Nigella Lawson and Rene Redzepi, found to be their most memorable meal of the past year. Gourmet Traveller magazine also adopted an interesting approach to looking back at 2016 with their list of Australia’s most-Googled food terms of the year  (pancakes topped the list).
