Pay for your food with a photo

Yes, it’s true. A pop-up restaurant in London is offering diners a free meal in exchange for them posting a photo to Instagram, according to The London Evening Standard. Naturally, there’s a catch: the menu items are “new chargrilled chicken and fish products from the Birds Eye inspirations range.”

Approximately ten percent of Britons admit to photographing their food at least once per week, and nine percent say they can’t go more than a day without doing so. These diners are also keen on presentation, with “more than a third of Britons admitting they artfully arrange their food on a plate with the intention of sharing it online, while more than a third take pictures of their meals to flex their artistic muscles.”

Birds Eye is promoting the popup restaurant as part of a major new advertising campaign called ‘Food for Life,’ with a goal of changing people’s perceptions of frozen food. If you are in London, the Picture House pop-up restaurant is open at the Ice Tank in Soho starting today (14 May). In addition to the meal, food photographer Marie Marte will be giving tutorials on how to take the ultimate food photo.

Do you post photos of your meals on social media? If so, how frequently do you do it?

I don't use social media, but I used to post photos of my meals there. I guess maybe every few days. I'm embarrassed to think of it now ๐Ÿ™‚ I guess it's a way of sharing what you're doing with everyone, which is one of the goals of social media. I do love taking photos of what I cook – it seems the only way to make something so transitory a little bit more permanent. I occasionally look through them and can remember what most everything tasted like by looking at the photo.

I'm a big offender, and post at least once a week. In my defense I have no kids or pets to post photos of.

Yes we do sometimes….we tend to rate a good meal on a 1 to 10 rating based on what we remember of the last 10 exceptional meals…lets hope the blue cod is a 10 tonight!!!

I have a recipe blog, so I suppose I shouldn't say that I think photos of food are overrated, but I do! I know from experience how difficult it is to photograph food well, and there's evidence every day on Instagram, Facebook et al of people doing it badly. So I prefer to leave it to the professionals, or those food bloggers who have really dedicated themselves to the art of taking good food photos and are prepared to take the time needed to get a good result.
