R.I.P. Twinkies, Ding Dongs, and Devil Dogs
November 16, 2012 by LindsayWe’ll admit that we haven’t eaten a Twinkie or Ding Dong in far more years than is possible, but the fact that these iconic U.S. lunch box treats will no longer be available is worthy of notice. Due to a variety of factors Hostess, the company that makes these (and other baked goods like Wonder Bread) is liquidating. And for several generations, at least in the United States, this will mean a bit of childhood is missing. (For those of you outside the United States a Twinkie is essentially a rolled up sponge cake with a vanilla cream filling.)
However, all is not lost. Thanks to the EYB library, we’ve found some resources that will allow any intrepid home cook to reproduce these little devils (did we mention that Devil Dogs will be going as well?). A quick search under recipes unearthed several homemade versions, along with other recipes to use them. And just as exciting is this discovery that in Smitten Kitchen, Deb has a recipe for homemade devil dog, ding dong, or Hostess cake.
It’s said that change is good, so perhaps this will be for the best. And with Hostess selling its assets, it’s possible that someone will revive the Twinkie. But a small moment of silence is still called far. R.I.P.
