Food trends for 2025

At the end of the year it’s common to look back at what happened in 2024 (best cookbooks lists coming up soon!) and also to predict what food trends will happen in 2025. To that end, Martha Stewart’s website has five trends to look for in the coming year.

According to these predictions, offal will be a hot ticket item in 2025, as will micro restaurants and collaborations across different industries. We’ve already seen that with a Wicked / Betty Crocker offering and Wendy’s restaurants having a SpongeBob-inspired burger. Culinary AI will take off in 2025 if these predictions are correct. One interesting application of that technology involves supermarkets using AI to analyze what’s in your shopping cart to bill you without having to stop at a checkout. I wonder if it will do a better job of identifying produce than the clerks do – but I wouldn’t bet the bank on that quite yet.

Whole Foods is also looking forward, and serves up ten food trend predictions and they are very different from the Martha Stewart set. Conveniently for Whole Foods, all of their predictions have products that they carry! International snacking, dumplings galore, and crunchy snacks are three of the items on the WF list, and I wouldn’t mind if all three of those came to fruition. Other predictions revolve around sustainability and they believe that tea is going to be big in 2025, as flavorings in other foods and as a beverage.

Cookist discusses eight trends they expect to happen next year, and a few of those echo the Whole Foods list, including climate conscious cuisine and plant-based alternatives to dairy. Lab-grown meat, fermented foods, and hyper-local ingredient sourcing are also anticipated to make a splash in 2025 according to this set of predictions. I am bad at prognostication, so I won’t attempt to guess at what is going to be trending next year, but if you have any ideas I would love to hear them.
