The Tomte Cake and Giveaway
December 6, 2022 by JennyAs I was scrolling through social media, a good friend posted photos of her girls making a Tomte cake (photo below of the cute Hartzell girls). And you know me – I am all about baking, cake and anything Nordic or Swedish. I commenced to google and ended up ordering two sets – one for myself and one for my sweet niece, Charlie.
The Tomte Cake is a book written and illustrated by Miranda Tompkins. The idea came about one evening while discussing gingerbread houses. The pre-packaged houses are huge, they taste like cardboard, the packaging is wasteful – it is basically a craft project that gets tossed. Miranda’s creative juices started flowing to make something memorable, delicious and fun!
In an hour and a half, she wrote The Tomte Cake book and took a year to beautifully illustrate the title. The gingerbread pan and Tomte character are produced in the USA. A set includes the book, the gingerbread pan and the adorable little Tomte character. Right now a set is on sale for $52 – and if you buy multiple sets (gifts!) the savings grows.
I think this is a cozy tradition to share with your children, grandchildren – and even other adults. I will bake a Tomte cake every year. The recipe for the cake comes with the set but it is also on Miranda’s website – and I have indexed it here: Tomte cake recipe with vanilla nutmeg buttercream frosting.
The story: Tomte the mischevious gnome accidentally falls into some cake batter and gets baked into a gingerbread house. Don’t freak out, he’s fine. It’s a children’s book! Bake the cake: Recreate the story by baking your own gingerbread house cake, and hiding Tomte in it! Find the Tomte: Legend has it that whoever finds Tomte in their cake has good luck for the rest of the Christmas season.
I have not received anything to recommend Tomte. I purchased two sets myself. I emailed Miranda as I was hoping she could mail one of the sets directly to my niece as it is getting close to the 25th. We ended up corresponding and I told her I wanted to do a post about Tomte. Miranda agreed to a giveaway. My two sets are on the way – one of them for myself and the other for one of you! (Miranda is mailing Charlie’s set directly to her.)
Order a set or more for your family and friends – Miranda runs the family business with her husband and you will be supporting a family-run small business with products made in the USA. (Book printed in China as most are). I love that the house and Tomte can hang around during the season with your holiday decor.
Special thanks to Miranda for providing one Tomte set for this worldwide promotion (since I am shipping out doing a worldwide promo – Miranda only ships US). Entry options include answering the following question in the comments section of Rafflecopter.
Visit the Tomte site and read “Our Story” and leave a comment on Rafflecopter about what Miranda wrote the story on and with what implement – don’t leave the answer here – just comment “I commented”.
