Beautiful bread takes on a whole new meaning
April 6, 2020 by DarcieJudging from the lack of flour and yeast on many grocery store shelves, there are a lot of budding bread bakers out there. Many will probably be forming their first loaves or perhaps returning to a hobby once abandoned. There’s plenty of inspiration for newly-minted bakers, and one Instagram account stands apart from the rest: @vineyardbaker. That’s the IG handle of Toronto-based baker who’s paving the way for gorgeous bread art.
As Food Network explains, @vineyardbaker is “putting the art in artisan breads” by crafting gorgeous patterns on her rustic breads. The process is simple: after allowing to dough to rise for a time, she presses fresh herbs, peppers, olives, and other ingredients into the bread to form flowers and other designs. To avoid soggy dough, the artist thoroughly pats down all of the fresh vegetables with a paper towel to extract excess moisture.
Scrolling through her feed will not only inspire you to create gardens on your foccacia, it will also make you hungry. I was particularly impressed by what looks like a bread bowl formed out of a cracker dough that has herbs pressed into it. The bowl is so thin that light shines through it, silhouetting the herbs in dramatic fashion.
