Young writers to watch
August 14, 2019 by DarcieAfter you’ve been collecting cookbooks and other food-related books, you tend to develop a fondness for certain writers and seek out their books. While favorite authors are awesome, it is nice to find new voices to add to your list and The Art of Eating Magazine can help with this task. They asked several established, well-loved food writers to name the best young or up-and-coming food writer that they have discovered.
Bonnie Benwick of The Washington Post is a fan of Ronna Welsh. Her first book, The Nimble Cook: New Strategies for Great Meals That Make the Most of Your Ingredients, departs from the popular “less is more” trend in cookbooks. Benwick says the extra verbiage is not just adding a “voice” to the writing, but that Welsh “offers cues that increase chances for successful outcomes.”
Beloved author Naomi Duguid has been reading a lot from Simon Thibault. In addition to his 2017 cookbook Pantry and Palate: Remembering and Rediscovering Acadian Food, Thibault contributes to several Canadian and US newspapers and magazines. Duguid calls his writing “strong and graceful”.
The article names over a dozen other writers, some of whom write cookbooks and others who are more essayists or scholarly writers. I’m sure you will jot down at least one name from the list to explore further.
