The Cake Bible, Crumbs and author events, EYBD Previews, recipes and more

The temperatures are dropping here in Colorado and there is a crispness to the air that I look forward to every year. Cooler temperatures mean more baking (and roasting, braising and using the oven). Just in time for this season, I want to tell you about a few more amazing baking books that you will need to add to your wishlist.

The Cake Bible, 35th Anniversary Edition by Rose Levy Beranbaum and Woody Wolston will be released on October 22nd! (Update: The book is being shipped out early so we published the index today.) For comparison’s sake, the original edition was published in 1988 and had 320 recipes with 592 pages. This new massive tome has 684 pages with 386 recipes. The original edition received the IACP Cookbook of the Year (1988); James Beard award in Baking & Desserts as well as Book of the Year (1988) and was awarded the IACP Culinary Classic award in 2017.

This new edition has new photographs and reflects the 35 years that Rose has revised and tweaked her recipes based on new methods and reader feedback. As always with Rose’s books, there are measurements in weights and volume (she was one of the first to do this in the USA) and she shares detailed, well delineated instructions for each recipe. There are countless charts to convert recipes into various sizes, pointers for success, and variations for many of her battle-tested recipes.

Rose doesn’t forget the past and the new edition shares the original foreword by Maida Heatter and a new one written by Ron Ben-Israel. The chapters are broken down by Cakes, Showcase Cases, Wedding and Special Occasion Cakes, Frostings and Other Adornments for All Cakes, Special Effects and Decorative Techniques and ends with a chapter on Ingredients and Equipment. She ends the bible with pages on high-altitude baking and list of recipes by eggs used.

If you are wondering “do I need the revised edition” the answer is unequivocally YES! Events are scheduled to promote this book and are available on our calendar. Look for a promotion/giveaway on this title soon.

Crumbs: Cookies and Sweets from Around the World by Ben Mims was released yesterday by Phaidon. This book is a stunner and covers cookie recipes from around 100 countries around the globe. Each recipe begins with a fascinating origin story, followed by clear, step-by-step instructions and notes on regional variations. There are ten EYBD Recipes to try now and the gives you an idea at how beautiful this title is. I am a fan of baking and especially international baking so this book is right up my alley. The author has two events scheduled October 29th at Now Serving in Los Angeles and November 18th at Archestratus Books + Food in Brooklyn NY. Ben has written several cookbooks and I love his Sweet & Southern: Classic Desserts with a Twist.

I will be working on a baker’s gift guide of cookbooks from this year and hope to have that published towards the beginning of November.

Thanks for the heads up on adding The Guardian; many great recipes to add. But the supplement underwent a name change in 2018, so to add all the recipes you seem to need to add two magazines: “The Guardian Food Supplement” and “The Guardian Feast Supplement”.

You don’t need to do that Fyretigger – just entering “The Guardian” will get all the indexed recipes. The easier way to add them is to add all the indexed issues of the magazine supplements in one go – explained here in Help. You can see all the indexed issues, right back to 2013, here or by clicking The Guardian supplement in the list of indexed magazines under Browse on the Magazines tab. Almost every recipe has an Online Recipe link so it’s worth adding all the issues to your Bookshelf – they have great recipes.

I put Julia Turshen’s new title on my Christmas wish list …then read a little more about it and promptly ordered it. So much for my annual October “no book purchases until after Christmas” resolution.
