James Beard Cookbook and Media Award winners

In a ceremony earlier this evening in Chicago, the James Beard Foundation has announced the winners of its media awards in Chicago. You may watch the awards which were live-streamed on YouTube here. Michelle Miller, co-host of CBS This Morning, served as emcee for the event. Highlights of the cookbook awards include Sohla El-Waylly taking home top honors in the General category for Start Here: Instructions for Becoming a Better Cook, Hetty Lui McKinnon’s Tenderheart: A Book About Vegetables and Unbreakable Family Bonds winning in the Vegetable-Focused category, and Regula Ysewijn taking the prize for Baking with Dark Rye & Honeycake: Festival Baking from Belgium, the Heart of the Low Countries.

The World Central Kitchen Cookbook: Feeding Humanity, Feeding Hope won in the International category, and Meryl Feinstein’s Pasta Every Day: Make It, Shape It, Sauce It, Eat It was named the best Single Subject cookbook. The winner of the US Foodways category was Love Japan: Recipes from our Japanese American Kitchen by Sawako Okuchi and Aaron Israel.

The JBF also announced the winners of its Broadcast Awards, which includes works are from digital and terrestrial media—radio, television broadcasts, podcasts, documentaries, online sites, and social media. The winner of the Audio Programming category was Fed with Chris van Tulleken (“Series 1: Planet Chicken”), which airs on BBC Sounds and BBC Radio 4. In the Documentary Visual Media category, top honors went to The Michoacan File, which airs at various film festivals.

Finally, the JBF honored its Journalism Award winners. A few highlights from those: in the Columns and Newsletters category, Laureli Ivanoff of High Country News was the winner, while the MFK Fisher Distinguished Writing Award went to “The Kids on the Night Shift” by Hannah Dreier of The New York Times Magazine.
