March 2024 New Cookbook Review

Cookbooks are roaring into March like a lion. March and April are big months for cookbook releases, then things slow down a bit before August through November brings in a plethora of delicious titles. Remember you can keep track of what is coming this year with our 2024 Cookbook Preview and don’t forget that you can create a wishlist and share it with your loved ones. Our March 2024 EYB Cookbook Club Summary and April 2024 Great Big Cookbook Club Summary can be found at the links provided.

Last May we announced that we have connected the EYB database to ckbk’s library of digital cookbooks. ckbk is a cookbook subscription site where you can access the full content of more than 830 great cookbooks, the majority of which are indexed here on EYB (and more will be indexed every week). Here you will find five pages devoted to one of my favorites, Kouign-amann, recipes for a variety of French breads, tarts, cookies and more. Recipes include: Caramel praline kouglof (a new to me pastry from the Alsace region which is similar to a Bundt cake), Chez Noir’s guinea hen and pork pâté en croûte, Bouchons aux canneberges (French shortbread cookies) and Financiers aux oignons (lovely little bites of savory deliciousness).

The Depanneur Cookbook by Len Senater showcases the astonishing range of Toronto’s culinary talent. Equal parts documentary, manifesto, and cookbook, the book features delicious food, poignant stories, and beautiful photography by Ksenija Hotic. More than just a collection of authentic home cooking from around the world, it is the only cookbook that truly captures the incredible culinary diversity of Toronto.

The Mythical Cookbook: 10 Simple Rules for Cooking Deliciously, Eating Happily, and Living Mythically by Josh Scherer: From the team behind the internet show Good Mythical Morning which spawned a culinary spinoff entitled Mythical Kitchen, comes a cookbook that is filled with whimsy and “cool kids” type dishes. Some examples of the far-out recipes include Animal style mac and cheese, Chicken and waffle pot pie, and Everything bagel fondue. I’m torn between loving the book and thinking I didn’t do enough drugs in my youth to appreciate the content. After I spend more time, I’ll make a decision.

French from the Market by Hillary Davis focuses on the best of traditional French provincial cuisine based on produce and foods fresh from the market, simply prepared, and delicious for everyday dining at home. There are 100 plus recipes for starters, soups, salads, fish, poultry, meats, vegetables, and desserts in this cookbook, along with detailed instructions and tips.

Bake from Scratch, Volume Eight: Artisan Recipes for the Home Baker by Brian Hart Hoffman: This latest collection of over 400 recipes from the editors of Bake from Scratch magazine features step-by-step tutorials, tried-and-tested recipes, and stunning photography. This cookbook will have you mastering yeasted breads, layer cakes and so much more in no time. Showcasing fresh, seasonal ingredients and celebrating tradition and history, this edition will offers something for every baking skill level from novice to expert. 

The Tried & True Cookbook: 150 Quick and Easy Recipes for Busy Families by Alyssa Rivers, a.k.a. The Recipe Critic, delivers comforting recipes that are practical, family friendly, and easy to make, often using helpful appliances so that busy people can still make delicious meals. From weekday dinners that will satisfy even the pickiest eaters, to amazing appetizers, sides, salads, and desserts, there’s something for everyone. Many of the meals can be made in 30 minutes or less, and Alyssa adds her simple, practical touch to every recipe she makes. Most importantly, every recipe has been tested by the toughest critics she knows: her friends and family, so you know they must be delicious!

Nourish: Simple Recipes to Empower Your Body and Feed Your Soul: A Healthy Lifestyle Cookbook by Gisele Bündchen showcases her belief that wellness begins with food.
