Kitchen product trends for 2024

Now that we know the food trends (or lack thereof) for 2024, let’s turn our sights to the kitchen product trends. In the past few years we have moved from Instant Pots to air fryers to home composting machines, so what is the next big product on the horizon? Food and Wine makes their predictions on which items are going to be hot in 2024.

In the ‘everything old is new again’ category, one F&W staffer thinks that pate and terrines will make a comeback. His choice for a terrine mold is one by Le Creuset (I’m sensing a theme here). If terrines are making a return, I predict that they will be more plant-based than meat-centric.

Again, just like we saw with the food trends, the article lists items that have been solid sellers for years and are not exactly new or innovative. F&W predicts that Le Creuset will be popular. Gosh, what a brave prognostication! They dub this as part of a “return to the classics” – as in people have been gravitating toward more design-forward items that haven’t lived up to their hype and now want more ‘bang for the buck’ with items that will be durable and therefore economical in the long run.

Despite inflation taking a bite out of everyone’s grocery budget, the article projects that caviar related items will be on the rise next year. Apparently there has been an uptick in the consumption of caviar, so they expect some bling in the serving utensils and other paraphernalia to follow. On the opposite end of the price spectrum from caviar, popcorn is also expected to surge in popularity along with tools like stovetop and microwave popcorn makers.

One thing not on F&W’s list that I have seen a lot of buzz about are semi-pro espresso machines. Maybe it’s just the algorithm feeding things to me, but I have noticed an uptick in the number of articles and advertisements about them. If they do end up trending, remember that you heard it here first. If this is an already established trend that I missed, please don’t tell me because I hate being the last to know.

According to my 28 yo daughter (who is much more clued in to the zeitgeist than I am) the caviar uptick this year is down to influencers such as Danielle Zaslavsky who are posting videos on TikTok of them eating caviar with cream cheese and Doritos. I haven’t tried this so I can’t comment on the taste but I’m a purist – blinis and crème fraiche are my accompaniments of choice (and what I will be having tomorrow on Christmas Day).

I can report that a local Native American nation has been working for several years to bring the sturgeon back to the Columbia River and its major tributaries. In the early 1900’s they were a major source of sturgeon caviar. In the meantime, the local sushi bars have significantly increased the intake of salmon roe among grandchildren so the seed for enjoying caviar is being planted early. Doritos and caviar sounds so wrong … well anything with Doritos sounds somewhat odd. My preference is to eat my junk food pure and not contaminate it with anything actually nutritious.
